Hello From Kate
“Aging Well” is a term I have been seeing around a lot more lately. Yes, it could be that I am more attuned to it given my job, but what I prefer to believe is that the concept of aging is no longer the boogie-man in our lives. Myriad publications are starting to put more light on the subject, not because aging is anything new, but because we are understanding that while we don’t have total control over it, there is a heck of a lot we can do to better our circumstances. And guess what, you are all on the ball. You are part of Staying Put and that means you have made a choice that staves off social isolation which is proven to increase our risk of premature death, heart disease, depression, anxiety, just to name a few of the heavy hitters. So now that you all know how brilliant you all are, share it! Ask that friend, neighbor, shopper who always seems to be at the market at the same time as you, and offer them an invitation to one of our upcoming events. Yes, we are member based, but no, we never turn anyone away. And think of it as an opportunity, not just for your guest, but also for you to continue aging well.

Author Visit at The Inn
Thurs., April 11th at 10am
Staying Put members are invited to The Inn (73 Oenoke Ridge) on Thursday, April 11 at 10 a.m. to hear the inspiring and jaw-dropping story of Jonathan Conyers. Growing up homeless with drug addict parents, Jonathan had to build his own village. He had to find caretakers, mentors and teachers who could lift him up – help him find his voice, find his people, find his way. Staying Put member, Midge Murphy, has a son who taught school in Harlem for 30 years and became one of Jonathan’s mentors. Mr. Murphy and Jonathan will be at The Inn to talk about Jonathan’s journey from the streets of Harlem to Medical School to becoming a respiratory therapist at NYU Langone Medical Center and the author of a recently published book, I Wasn’t Supposed to be Here.
