The coronavirus pandemic is taking its toll on Americans' mental health, with more than 88,000 people developing anxiety or depression as a result, according to Mental Health America (MHA).

We need to invest in the safety-net institutions that serve and support our most vulnerable now and during times of crisis. COVID-19 is decimating our fragile, unfunded and outdated safety net, and the vital links between families and their local economic, health and social supports. Now, we are asking ourselves: How do we reimagine a post-COVID-19 safety net that prevents ACEs and toxic stress? .

Dr. Moira Szilagyi, a pediatrician and interim chief of General Pediatrics at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), has a couple of tried-and-true methods of breaking down communication barriers with teenage patients, and they’ve worked well during the COVID-19 pandemic.
