Dear Steele Families,
As you know, DPS is experiencing major staffing challenges as we navigate our third year living and working with COVID. So far, Steele hasn’t been severely impacted, but we know things can change quickly. Many families have asked how they can support during these uncertain times. Here are some things that can help:
Volunteer- We will always welcome volunteers. We definitely appreciate any extra help during recess, but are also grateful for volunteers who can help if we need staffing support in the office or in classrooms if teachers request it. To volunteer you will need to provide proof of vaccination and pass the DPS Background Check.
Apply to be a Guest Teacher- Steele is lucky to have quite a few amazing guest teachers to call when staff is out. That said, we have found ourselves without a guest teacher many times already this year. If you think you have the background, patience, and fortitude to be a guest teacher you can apply here.
Moral Support- Continue to support our staff with kind words, emails, and empathy. The strain of working in uncertainty can really take a toll on our staff’s spirits and their health. Your appreciation for their hard work goes a long way!

S.C.A.T Marshall Fire Supply Drive:
The Steele Community Action Team (S.C.A.T) is sponsoring a supply drive to benefit victims of the Marshall Fire starting on January 21 and running through February 4. We are working with the Marshall Fire Donations Center to collect some much-needed items for displaced families. If your family would like to help, please bring any of the following NEW items to the donation collection box outside the Steele cafeteria: flashlights; first aid kits; blankets; stuffed animals; backpacks; Gibson Kitchen sets or other kitchen items. Questions? Reach out to Julie Lees or Sarah Almy Moore.

A BIG thank you to all of the families who contributed to the staff/teacher appreciation gift during the holidays. The teachers and staff were shocked by your generosity. We will do it again at the end of the year. Thank you thank you thank you!

Volunteer
Be Part of It! Come volunteer at Steele! Remember to share your vaccine card (and proof of booster if vaccine is more than 6 months prior) at the front desk and complete your background check before volunteering.
Recess Volunteers: New sign-ups for recess volunteers are live on Membership Toolkit! It is a small, yet mighty way to help Steele keep an eye on all of the action on the playground. Times for each recess period and more info is available on Membership Toolkit. Remember to check in with staff outside to find out how you can help after you say hello to your child :)
Green Team Volunteers: Steele’s lunchroom recycling and composting program is back, and we need additional volunteers for the Green Team to help make it a continued success! Green Team volunteers will monitor the lunchroom sorting station (currently grades 3-5) and answer students’ questions to ensure items go in the correct waste receptacle. We ask that you try to volunteer at least two shifts a month. Please contact Becky Goyton to sign up to volunteer with the Green Team and be trained on how to compost monitor in Steele’s lunchroom.
