A Season of Opportunity - Book of Numbers, Chapter 13

Friends,

This Sunday, October 1, we will celebrate World Communion Sunday along with millions of Christians around the world. World Communion Sunday reminds us of our unity in Jesus Christ who conducted the first Holy Communion service on the eve of his arrest and eventual crucifixion in Jerusalem. At that Communion Service, Jesus gave his disciples instructions to remember Him every time they commune together. And so, in remembrance of what Jesus Christ has done for us, we will commune together and remember Him by reflecting on selected verses from the Book of Numbers, chapter 13. The sermon title is, A Season of Opportunity. In this scripture, Moses is leading the children of Israel out of Egypt toward the Promised Land of Canaan. The journey is taking too long, and the Israelites are beginning to question whether the journey is worth it. Moses is caught between a rock and a hard place. He turns to God for help, then God gives instructions on what to do for the people. What unfolds after Moses follows God’s instructions is an amazing revelation of how God works and why people who face challenges in life should put their trust in God.

Come and worship with us as we ponder together God’s amazing grace and unconditional love. Music will be uplifting, people will welcome you, and you may discover God beckoning you to not give up. Come, let us commune together.

I invite you to worship at 9:30 a.m. in-person or online, and at 11:00 a.m. in-person. Sunday School is paused this week for Family Worship. Nursery Care is available during the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. service.

I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Promises of God: Hope and a Future

Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28

In one of the most famous verses of Scripture, God promises “hope and a future.” This Sunday, October 1, we’ll examine that verse in context. Who was God speaking to? What had they been through? What does it mean for us today? Invite someone to come to church with you this Sunday to discover what God has planned for each of us.

A Legacy of Faithfulness

A beneficiary designation is one of the simplest ways to make a planned gift to Birmingham First. Retirement plans, IRAs, life insurance, donor advised funds, and commercial annuities distribute assets based on beneficiary forms making beneficiary designations an effective and easy way for you to leave a legacy. With a simple form, you can update your beneficiary designations and specify the individuals and charities you want to support and specify the percentage of your assets you want each beneficiary to receive.

Designating Birmingham First as a beneficiary is a simple and easy to use method for leaving a legacy of faithfulness.  For more information, contact Rev. Shawn Lewis-Lakin, Associate Pastor for Planned Giving, at slewis-lakin@fumcbirmingham.org or 734-717-8947. You can also visit our Planned Giving website by clicking the button below.

Crop Walk Recap

The Lord provided great weather for the 52nd Birmingham/Bloomfield CROP Walk. Along with other area churches, we met on the Plaza before the walk to hear from four inspirational and uplifting Charity Speakers before the 2-mile walk began through the City of Birmingham. The walk culminated at First Presbyterian next door for an Ice Cream Social provided by Ray's Ice Cream of Royal Oak.

We had a total of 66-walkers from all participating churches. Birmingham First had 23-walkers. We have raised $4,852 of our target of $9,100. If you would like to donate, there is still time! Click the button below to donate today.
