Dear Steinbrenner Students, Families, and Teachers,
Spring is here, at long last, and the weeks will seem to fly by until we get to summer vacation and the end of another school year.  Our board is still hard at work, planning events and laying the foundation for the next school year.
Look for details in this newsletter on how you can help with Teacher Appreciation Week this month, the "Stuff the Backpack" project and stay tuned for details on our end of year parking space auction fundraiser in May, the proceeds of which go towards scholarships for seniors at Steinbrenner.
As you plan for your volunteer commitments for the upcoming year, please consider joining the PTSA as a member of the board.  We still have positions open for the 2018/2019 school year.
If you've never been to a PTSA general meeting before, I'd like to encourage you to attend our general meeting on  Thursday, May 3 at 5:30 pm,   We will be electing the board for the next school year.  New faces and new ideas are what will continue to keep our PTSA vibrant, so please come out and share yours with us. We hope you'll join us.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
"A strong PTSA embodies parent involvement and parent involvement represents student success."

Please encourage your student to put their unneeded reusable items in the labeled bins. You are also welcome to send in supplies with your student on their locker clean-out day.

Hillsborough County Public Schools students are outperforming their peers across the country, as our district has now been ranked a top-rated school district in America!

The significant results were announced today by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Testing by NCES is part of a national initiative commonly called "The Nation's Report Card." It rates performance by fourth- and eighth-grade students in 27 large school districts covering communities across the USA from San Diego to Boston.
Leaders in Tampa's business community are celebrating the success. They are seeing a clear connection between these results and our area's power to compete for economic development and growth in the future.
"One of the top selection criteria for companies evaluating Hillsborough County for relocation or expansion is the availability of highly skilled talent and a robust pipeline of well-educated students coming from our local K-12 and higher education systems," said Craig J. Richard, CEcD, president and CEO of the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation.

"This ranking strengthens our region's competitiveness and helps us to attract the high paying jobs that will ensure our long term economic prosperity," Richard said.

Overall, Hillsborough's students maintained a high level of performance, most significantly, 4th graders tied for first place nationally in reading and math, while 8th graders tied for first place in reading and second place in math nationwide. The students continue to outperform public school students in other large school districts.

"I am thrilled for our students, our teachers and staff. These results show our students are excelling in the classroom and can compete with students across the country. Our increased graduation rate and now these significant results show students, from our early learners all the way to our high school students are paving the way to a successful future," said Superintendent Jeff Eakins.

School security update from Superintendent Eakins and State Attorney Andrew Warren
Dear Parents and Guardians,

A safe space is essential for learning. As the chief executives of Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office, educating kids and keeping them safe is why we go to work every day. Andrew Warren, the State Attorney, has two school-age children. Jeff Eakins, the Superintendent, has served as an educator for more than 30 years. The tragic shooting at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has raised questions and concerns about how we are keeping our children safe. We are writing to give you an update on school security in Hillsborough County.

New laws were just passed in Tallahassee, and our law enforcement partners have already begun working on ways to put those laws into action. As the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and police departments in Tampa, Plant City, and Temple Terrace develop those plans, we are partnering with them to engage our community about how we will all work together to create even safer schools.

With our law enforcement and education colleagues, we are evaluating who accesses our schools and how. We are examining our school communication and surveillance systems, and assessing our emergency procedures. We have been communicating with students, parents, teachers, and staff about school security.

We have also been speaking with elected officials across the state and country about proposed legislative steps in Tallahassee and Washington, DC.

force will have three primary objectives: (1) developing a plan of action; (2) effectively implementing new legislation; and (3) recommending additional legislative steps. We want your input.
