Wine Of The Week

Hello Klaus,

Grüner Veltliner

Grand Grü

Steininger makes a range of delicious wines from Austria's best white grape, and they intend the Grand Grü to be at the top of their line. The name is a fun play on words - evoking both the French concept of "Grand Cru" quality and the Steininger's belief that this is a

"Grand" Grüner Veltliner!

Fruit for this wine comes from their best vineyard and is harvested in late October.

The perfectly ripe fruit ferments and ages in large Acacia wood casks.

The next generation is taking over

Three sisters - three passions.....

Eva Steininger, Anna Arndorfer and Lisa Steininger-Fonseca are the daughters of Brigitta and Karl Steininger and all three have devoted themselves to wine, champagne and fortified wine. All three daughters live out their passions in Kamptal with their husbands. Together, they have created packages that have something for everyone.

Every year is different,

this makes our work so exciting!

"Producing wine is a challenge every year. More than a hundred steps create the wine. We try to work very carefully in the vineyards at all times, so we can harvest healthy and ripe grapes each year.

Each vine absorbs the impressions from nature and gives the wine its personality.

Our philosophy is to make wines, which show the fruit and the character of the grape. We love the stylistics which we receive because of the cool climate and the terroir of the Kamptal – the flavors are clear, profound and expressive.

We focus on the main varieties of Kamptal, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. These varieties are very attractive to us because of the different vineyards and the different vintage conditions they produce, resulting in very interesting wines."

Kamptal DAC

GRÜNER VELTLINER & RIESLING, MILLIONS OF YEARS YOUNG

Named after the river Kamp that runs through it, the Kamptal’s principal town is Langenlois, Austria’s largest wine-producing town. Kamptal is one of the most successful wine regions in Austria, and boasts a high proportion of outstanding, high quality wine producers. Culture and tourism also enjoy particular prominence here. Since the 2008 vintage, the designation Kamptal DAC has been used to label

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling

produced in classic-to-middleweight styles and as dense, dry Reserve wines.

Kamptal - Langenlois

Weingut Steininger is located in Austria’s biggest wine growing village, Langenlois in the Kamptal region. Kamptal refers to the Kamp river which runs through the region and eventually empties into the Danube. The Kamptal area is filled with culture and tourism, which are enhanced by the numerous Heurigen, wine taverns and Vinotheques. The Steininger family estate comprises 135 acres and is owned by Karl & Brigitta Steininger. Karl inherited the farm from his parents in 1980, at this time and as young newlyweds, Brigitta and Karl decided to focus on grape growing and Karl soon found himself in oenology school. The winery was launched 1989.

Brigitta and Karl realized very quickly that they could only survive on the international market with high quality wines. “Our philosophy is to make wines, which show the fruit and the character of the grape. We love the stylistics, which we receive because of the cool climate and the terroir of the Kamptal – the flavors are clear, proud and expressive. We focus on the main varieties of Kamptal, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. These varieties are very attractive to us because they produce very interesting wines from different vineyards and the different vintage conditions.” Karl’s chief lesson to his children is that good wine cannot be rushed. It must be given the time it needs to develop, mature and evolve. Their oldest daughter Eva and her husband Peter are the next generation of winemakers. Peter is working with Karl in the winery and Eva is responsible for sales and marketing.

Grüner Veltliner Grand Grü

Kamptal DAC Reserve 2022

Shiny Yellow-green, aromas of ripe apple and pear, a nuance of herbs, honey and apricot. Powerful and complexity, the finish is long and opulent, perfect for aging but also a highlight for a delicious dinner.

Serving Suggestion: Asian food, scallops, lobster, roasted meat, matches also to typical Austrian dishes like Wiener Schnitzel,

simply one of the "best food wines" or just when you want a good glass of wine:

the Grand Grü will do a great job!

93pts.

Tasting from 10.07.2023: Peter Moser

"Light yellow-green, silver reflections.

Delicate tobacco, fine nuances of ripe stone fruit, a touch of quince, soft notes of tangerine zest. Juicy, elegant, fine peach fruit, mineral, a touch of fruit sweetness, honeydew melon on the finish, good length, a reliable food wine with ageing potential."
