Case Study: Athens home landscape renovation in golf course community

This lovely Athens home in Oconee County is on the golf course. The homeowners wanted to enjoy the view of the greens and have a patio area below the deck. The drainage swale running across the grass was the major problem to solve.
After
A rustic stone patio was built, and the drainage swale was dug deeper with river rock added. The patio will have moss between the stones, and adirondak furniture. This picture with my landscape crew was taken the day of substantial completion. The sod is not green yet, and most of the plants are not leafed out.
Before the Design: Check List for a Successful Landscape Project
  • Write down your ideas and goals for the project. Collect pictures of your ideal landscape.
  • List problems that must be dealt with such as drainage, areas for trash cans, ugly views, etc.
  • What do you like and dislike about your current landscaping.
  • What features do you want in the landscape, such as decks or patios, special gardens, etc.
  • What preferences do you have for plants: colors, level of maintenance, or sentimental value.
  • General costs range for the work.
  • What are your priorities from high to low, (in case we need to adjust the costs we'll prioritize.)
  • How do we deal with differing opinions of members of the household on what should be done.
The most successful projects evolve from unstructured conversations between the homeowners and designer. Communication is the key to understanding your goals, desires, and priorities for your project.
The homeowners wanted to remove the trees next to the deck.
They had dense surface roots and dropped litter on the house and deck.
Here is the site after tree removal and grading. A considerable amount of water euns through a drainage channel.
The masonry crew builds the retaining walls and set the rustic stone patio. Stepping stone paths are set for access from the deck to patio.
Masonry is done and final grading and topsoil is brought in. Here we pause to think and fine tune the design before the landscaping begins.
A Mary garden is built on the shady side of house. A Bear's Breech with large glossy leaves is planted behind the statue.
