May 2026

From Woodbury Parks and Recreation

Dear Woodbury,

Just like that, April is over and we are moving on to May. It’s been a very mixed bag in terms of the weather, but I myself have been happy to get some warmer days again. As we move further into Spring, we still have plenty going on to take advantage of the nicer weather.

Before getting into the month ahead, I want to talk about Earth Day this past weekend. We were fighting the weather a bit, but despite that we had a really good turnout. Our staff worked very hard on this event, and I am grateful for this team and everything we were able to accomplish for Earth Day this year. I also need to thank Monica Gati for everything she did with Kids Korner, as well as Ashlee Thomas and Amanda Carpenter for the Sustainable Style and Green Reads section of the event.

Now that it is May, we have some things to look forward to this month. Firstly, we have our Mother-Son Spring Dance this Saturday, May 2nd. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, this is an excellent chance for moms to get some fun quality time with their boys. We also have a new cheerleading program starting on May 2nd at Hollow Park, so please head to our website and register for these new offerings while you still can.

We are just a few weeks out from our Memorial Day Parade, coming up on Sunday, May 24th. Given that this is a milestone year, we hope to see many of you at the parade to support the town for America250. Applications to march in the parade are still being accepted, so please visit our website for more information if your organization would like to join us.

Our maintainers have been plenty busy outside this past month. The fields are looking great and are ready for plenty of youth sports this spring. If you are down in Hollow Park, please take advantage of our newly renovated restrooms. The men’s and women’s restrooms are now ready for the season, and the new family restroom will be completed soon.

Thank you to all of you for your continued support of Woodbury Parks and Recreation.

Sincerely,

Graham Musson

WPR Instructor Highlight - Say Leigh Hall-Wilhelm

Leigh is our American Mahjong Instructor. She discovered American Mahjong in 2021 and quickly fell in love with the game’s blend of strategy, skill, and social connection. After struggling to find someone to teach her the basics, she became determined to create a more welcoming path for others to learn. Since then, she has been playing regularly and sharing her passion by teaching beginners in a clear, supportive way. Her classes focus on building a strong foundation—covering the fundamentals, introducing beginner strategy, and guiding students toward confidently playing on their own. By the end, you may still play slowly, but you’ll be playing independently—and that’s the goal. After all, Mahjong is a game of practice (and a good sense of humor).

A Connecticut native, Leigh moved to Woodbury in 2021 after many years in NYC. Leigh runs the NYC catering department for Murray’s Cheese—so yes, she’s always happy to talk cheese and build a beautiful spread. When she’s not at the Mahjong table or talking all things dairy, you’ll find her deeply involved in her community: volunteering in two roles at Steep Rock Preserve, reading her way through two to three books a week, attending the book club she founded in Woodbury, or getting a little creative at her Thursday night pottery sessions!

We're so glad she's sharing her love of Mahjong with Woodbury! With May and June classes filled, registration is now open for July. Register soon.

Woodbury Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony

Memorial Day in Woodbury ~ Join us on Sunday, May 24 for Woodbury's Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony, a meaningful day of remembrance and tradition. The parade steps off at 2:00pm from Woodbury Middle School, along Washington Avenue to Church Street, onto Main Street and concluding at Cannon Green.

New this year, we are excited to introduce our Parade Day Market at North Green, a small, thoughtfully curated market featuring a selection of local vendors. We invite you to come into town early, grab a coffee or ice cream, and take a relaxed stroll through the vendor tables before the afternoon's events begin.

We invite local groups interested in participating to submit a parade application and be part of this special community event. We are also hosting our annual Float Contest, along with the always popular Bike Brigade. Children interested in participating in the Bike Brigade should plan to line up at 1:30 pm at Woodbury Middle School. A bike decoration station, hosted by Aces International Preschool and Child Care Center, will be available at the market to help young riders get parade-ready.

Immediately following the parade, the community will gather at Cannon Green for the Memorial Ceremony, the heart of the day, hosted by Woodbury American Legion Post 155, to honor those who gave their lives in service.

We hope you will find your spot along Main Street and join us as our community comes together to honor our heroes and remember their sacrifice.
