Summer Celebrations

The summer solstice is in just a couple days! Summer is always something to celebrate, but this year we've got a few extras to cheer for:

Baseball—Baseball and summer go together like, well...a ball and a bat. Rivers of Steel is celebrating this sport's season in two ways. Next week we'll be screening two baseball-themed films at the Carrie Carpool Cinema, which inspired Ron Baraff to share a story on the origins of the legendary Forbes Field ballpark.

Uniquely Pittsburgh—This new sightseeing tour on the Explorer riverboat had been in development for nearly a year, and just yesterday we launched it! Check out our Instagram for some pics from the event, or just get yourself tickets for an upcoming tour.

Doors Open Homestead—You won't want to miss next Saturday's Homestead Neighborhood Event. Rivers of Steel has partnered with Doors Open Pittsburgh to celebrate Homestead's colorful and eclectic charms through a walking tour of buildings and public events.

And there's just one last thing to celebrate—the easing of pandemic restrictions! Currently, fully vaccinated individuals may refrain from wearing a mask during our programs. Then, in accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's mandate, other restrictions will be lifted on June 28.

Cheers—here's to safely getting out there and enjoying summer!

Forbes Field is iconic in the memories of many Pittsburghers (and in the Pittsburgh diaspora), but in its early days it was characterized as "Dreyfuss's Folly"—a mockery of the vision of the Pittsburgh Pirates' owner and president Barney Dreyfuss. With the assistance of some historic images, Ron Baraff shares the origins of this legendary ballpark.
