Don’t Miss Stephanie Land on March 1

Best-selling author Stephanie Land joins us on Friday evening, March 1, as the second author in the Library Foundation’s Author! Author! Literary series. Land’s first book, Maid, was made into a series for Netflix. You can buy tickets online and at the door. Premium tickets are are also still available, which give you access to a private reception with Land before her presentation. Tickets are also available for the final author in the series, Robin Wall Kimmerer (Braiding Sweetgrass, May 16). Ticket sales allow the Library Foundation to support library programs and services that are not paid for with tax dollars. A Novel Idea Is Right Around the Corner

Visit our website to learn more about the 2024 community read selections: Shark Heart (for teens and adults) and No Matter the Distance (for youth). Programming begins in May, and final author events take place on June 1 (featuring Emily Habeck) and May 18 (featuring Cindy Baldwin). All A Novel Idea programs, including the authors presentations, are free of charge thanks to the support of the Deschutes Public Library Foundation.

Know Coast throughout March

Embark on a journey to explore shipwrecks, sunsets, ceviche, and more! Use paper and fabrics to create a seascape and explore the global impact of oysters. Paint an Oregon landscape and hear stories of climate change surrounding the Skagit River. Learn about the forerunner of today’s Coast Guard and discover how different cultures used ships to bury their dead. Literary March Madness: Tournament of Books!

Literary March Madness takes over Deschutes Public Library during the month of March. Thirty-two non-human literary characters face off in a head-to-head voting contest to see which one comes out on top. You can vote in library locations each week as the characters advance to the next round. Who will come out on top? Be part of the fun! Learn more on our website.

Apply for the Library Budget Committee

The Deschutes Public Library System has a vacancy on the budget committee. Budget committee members are chosen from qualified registered voters residing in Deschutes County. The term for this position runs from May 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026. Visit our website to learn more and to apply; all applications are due by 4:00 p.m., March 28, 2024.

Beyond the Books: Gale Courses

Gale Courses offers a wide range of highly interactive, instructor-led courses that you can take entirely online. You’ll find hundreds of courses to choose from in everything from genealogy and American Sign Language to graphic design and creative writing. There are even college exam prep courses. Explore the full range of offerings by visiting our website. Your Deschutes Public Library card gives you free access to Gale Courses, which run for six weeks; new sessions begin every month.


Service Spotlight: Tax Prep Assistance with Tax Aide

Take some of the sting out of preparing your taxes with free access to professional assistance. Learn more about tax credits and have an IRS-Certified Volunteer prepare your taxes with Tax Aide, which is offering free tax preparation sessions for Central Oregonians at the Downtown Bend Library. Taxes are prepared online and electronically transmitted to the IRS. Sessions run every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
