Wrapping Up 2022!
The Foundation School of Montgomery County (FSMC) wrapped up 2022 with a series of holiday activities and an amazing display of support for our Adopt-A-Family drive. In the days leading up to winter break, students and staff participated in a Holiday Spirit Week. They decorated wooden dreidels and learned to play the dreidel game, made elaborate paper ornaments, and constructed winter fortresses out of marshmallows and toothpicks. The week ended with the students judging a staff ugly sweater fashion show, the winner being chosen by the loudest cheers, before we all headed off for a well-deserved break.
During our annual Adopt-A-Family drive, we collected monetary and in-kind donations to provide gifts to 22 of our students and their entire families, supporting more than 65 of our community members in need. As always, we thank our generous donors for giving us the means to provide for our families and ensure that they had an amazing holiday season filled with joy.

FSMC Celebrates Black History Month
Throughout the month of February, students and staff participated in engaging activities and lessons to commemorate Black History Month, including:
- Designing t-shirts
- Decorating classrooms
- Performing in a Black History Month talent show
- Coming together for a staff/student potluck
The month culminated with a small group of high school students making a positive behavior incentives trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. We thank all the students and staff for their amazing participation and hope that each person walked away with at least one new piece of information about African American History.

Incentive Social Activities
We are rewarding our students for positive behavior and academic performance! Our staff has worked diligently this year to plan creative social activities for our students to earn as exciting incentives. Meeting the interests of different students, these activities have widely varied and our students are loving them! Activities have included a yoga class, a fruit salad bar, a relaxing afternoon of watching a movie while enjoying snacks, and a winter treat of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Fun with STEM
Our students are exploring how fun STEM can be! Learning science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through meaningful, hands-on experiences is a great way for students with emotional disabilities to engage in their lessons. In biology, students learned the ins and outs of using a microscope and took detailed pictures of a pine needle. Meanwhile, our middle school classes used Base 10 blocks to build various shapes and buildings including soaring towers. Having some Valentine’s Day fun, our high school math classes used a graph to draw a heart and created abstract art out of geometric shapes.

Congratulations to our Newcomer Staff of the Second Quarter,
Ms. Munaf. Ms. Munaf joined the FSMC team in November as the high school math teacher. She has brought her patient, consistent, and creative presence to the math room, engaging even the most challenging students with fun lessons that reach them where they are and help them to stretch to their full math potential. She has built strong relationships with students and staff and truly exemplifies our core values of respect and integrity.
You can find her walking laps around the hallway if that is what it takes to get a student to understand the math work or to agree to return to the math classroom. She is always looking for ways to grow as a teacher and find new ways to engage students. Congratulations to Ms. Munaf for being chosen as the FSMC Newcomer Staff of the Second Quarter!

Congratulations to our Staff of the Second Quarter, Mr. Lowery. Mr. Lowery has been an integral part of the dedicated aide team at FSMC since 2020. He is a hard worker and is always ready to do whatever he is asked to do to ensure that students experience as many successes as possible. This can look like Mr. Lowery accompanying a student through the school, helping a student who struggles with a classroom assignment, dressing up in a crazy outfit to fit a theme day, or filling in for a staff member.
He is always on time to work, rarely missing a day, and is a consistent, dependable presence in the school. He is a great example of our core values teamwork and work ethic, recently taking on a new challenge of subbing in a program assistant role in a lower school classroom. Congratulations to Mr. Lowery for being chosen as the FSMC Staff of the Second Quarter!
