A Message from the Financial Aid Office
|
|
Greetings from Financial Aid Office at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. I am thrilled that you will be a part of our KSUCPM family! Financial Aid can be overwhelming, but I am available to you to assist you through this process.
FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
The first step in this process is completing your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Even if you think you will not be borrowing Federal Loans, you may want to have this on file for other aid programs such as Federal Work Study or need based scholarships that use the federal calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC). To complete your FAFSA you will go to www.studentaid.gov. If this is your first time completing the FAFSA, you will create an account (FAFSA ID) https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch?continueTo=fafsa.
FASFA Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When can I start completing my FASFA?
A: October 1 of each year is the start of the FAFSA season for the next academic year.
Q: When do I need to have my FASFA completed by?
A: The priority processing deadline is February 1; however, the financial aid office will continue to process FAFSA’s after this date. The priority processing gets in the front of the line when financial aid awards are processed.
Q: What year income taxes do I need to use for my FAFSA Application?
A: You will use the prior year tax information for your FAFSA. For example: for the academic year 2022-2023 you will use income from 2020 tax filings (representing earnings from January 1, 2020-December 31, 2020). To simplify this step, you have the option of importing your taxes (if you filed) from the IRS into your FAFSA application by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. If you did not file taxes, you can answer ‘did not file’ from the drop-down box. If you are ineligible for this feature, you need your 2020 Federal Tax return and W-2 forms to complete your FAFSA.
Q: What school code do I use for KSUCPM?
A: KSUCPM processes financial aid under the school code 003051 -Kent State University, Kent, OH
Q: What happens once I submit my FAFSA?
A: Once you submit your FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within 3-5 days that summarizes the information you provided on the FAFSA. Review and make sure your information is accurate. Your school will also receive a copy of this report and will use to determine your eligibility in federal financial aid. Also, make sure to report your social security number to the office of enrollment management so your FAFSA can import into our system properly.
Q: When will I know what financial aid I qualify for and how?
A: The financial aid office will begin the awarding financial aid in late March. You will be notified at your KSUCPM email that your financial aid is ready for you to review. You can accept the award(s), decline the award(s) or you can accept at a lesser amount. There will be additional requirements listed in your financial aid portal that you will also need to complete such as federal entrance counseling and master promissory notes for each loan program.
Q: Do I have to include my parent(s) information on the FASFA?
A: As a graduate professional student you are not required to put parent information on the FAFSA. However, this information will be needed if you apply Loans for Disadvantage Students. The Loans for Disadvantage students are subsidized while in school (no interest is accruing), and 5% fixed interest in repayment. Another benefit is there is no loan origination fees taken from your loan funds. Click here for addition information on these loans.
Please let me know how I can further assist you in this process. My direct phone is 216-916-7490 and email is kwrigh32@kent.edu.
Sincerely yours,
Katherine A. Wright, M.Ed.
