Sterling Ranch Partners with Vanderbilt University
Each year, Sterling Ranch partners with Vanderbilt University to assist students in understanding residential developments. This year, one of the students is researching thoughts and feelings toward smart communities like Sterling Ranch. Below is a message from the research student. Please consider assisting in completing the research project bby taking the survey.

Message from Vanderbilt student: Please take 1 to 2 minutes to answer the following multiple choice survey questions, which will be recorded anonymously. The survey questions were written by Vanderbilt University student Kate Petosa for her senior honors project, and as part of a partnership between Vanderbilt University and Sterling Ranch. Kate’s research aims to better understand the experience and priorities of smart community residents in several key development areas.
Thank you for your participation. All responses are completely anonymous. If you have any questions, you can contact Kate at [email protected].
Illumination Conundrum
Walking around Sterling Ranch is quite a beautiful sight these days. Holiday lights abound as so many residents have gone all out to illuminate their homes to spectacular levels! Light displays like these bring smiles to faces but as the holidays fade away, the desire to light one’s home does not. There lies the illumination conundrum.

Have you ever looked up at the night skies and marveled at the beauty of the stars? The Dark Sky Initiative is an international campaign to reduce light pollution and protect the vibrantly starry skies. Sterling Ranch follows Douglas County’s mandated Dark Sky initiative. In addition to Dark Sky initiatives, Sterling Ranch has other rules and regulations regarding exterior lighting. Navigating these rules and regulations can be daunting for anyone. The CAB recognized this and approved the Enforcement Committee to undertake an Exterior Lighting project. This project includes the Enforcement Committee’s review of the exterior light regulations detailed in Governing Documents and the Douglas County Dark Sky initiative and then an education series for residents. During this time, enforcement of exterior light violations is on hold until February in order for all residents to understand what they can and cannot do when it comes to exterior lighting.

The Exterior Lighting Resident Education Series
  • January (2nd week) – Presentation of Dark Sky Initiative and Sterling Ranch Exterior Lighting Rules and Regulations. Presented by the Enforcement Committee and CAB Staff.
  • January (3rd week)- Presentation of Ideas for Illuminating the Exterior of your Home. This will be a presentation of how-to ideas and example products that align with current Exterior Lighting regulations and Dark Sky initiative. Presented by a professional Lighting Consultant.
  • January (4th week) – Astronomy Night – An outdoor event celebrating the night sky.

Please watch for the dates and times of the above events. It is important, that as the Sterling Ranch Community grows we appreciate our spectacular night sky as much as we appreciate the beautiful architecture and landscaping of our neighborhood.

  • Enforcement Committee: January 5, 5:00pm

Holiday Movies with Safety Messages
Emergencies don’t stop during the winter holiday season. In fact, many injuries and incidents, from heart attacks to cooking fires, increase between November and January. Watching Christmas movies is one of my holiday traditions and I’ve realized that several of my favorite movies contain safety messages. I hope these movies and their risk reduction tips resonate with you and your families.
