Sincere Condolences

Ingrid Solveig Lee

1942-2026

We are sad to announce that longtime horse owner and HBPA member Ingrid Lee passed away at her home on April 28, 2026. A devoted teacher in Winnipeg's inner city during her working career, Ingrid was a lover of all animals, but especially her horses at Assiniboia Downs.

Ingrid was an active member of the HBPA for many years. She will be greatly missed by her many friends in the backstretch, and lovingly remembered by her family, extended family and friends for her tenacity, resilience, kindness, compassion, and willingness to always lend a helping hand.

A private Celebration of Life, to be announced at a later date, will be held in Ingrid's honour. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to donate to a charity of your choice.

A Snapshot in Time by Bob Gates

Pictured is one of my all-time faves, Anna Stables’ Mr. Bizbee with Joseph Selyem up on June 14, 1975. Bizbee was the picture of consistency in 1975. The 8-year-old gelding started 10 times at the Downs, winning 3 and finishing second 4 times. He was a simple, honest horse! (Gerry Hart Photo)

2026 Preakness Stakes Cheat Sheet

Saturday's Preakness Stakes (G1) will be remembered as unique when racing historians look back years from now. The 151st edition of the second jewel in U.S. horse racing’s Triple Crown will be held for the first, and probably only, time at Laurel Park in suburban Baltimore, Md.

The Preakness anchors a sensational two days of racing at Laurel Park starting Friday, May 15. A full, competitive 14-horse field has been entered.

Get information about each of the contenders plus gambling insights in this Cheat Sheet presented by 1/ST BET.

There is a lot of speed in the 151st Preakness, which could set things up nicely for Derby third Ocelli's late charge. (Barbara D. Livingston / DRF)

Preakness may not be flashy, but large field doesn't lack intrigue

For all the talk about who isn’t in the field and where the race isn’t being run, the 151st Preakness Stakes will actually be held Saturday in its typical place on the calendar.

There are three runners from the Kentucky Derby in the Preakness – third-place finisher Ocelli, sixth-place finisher Incredibolt, and 14th-place finisher Robusta.

Ocelli is still a maiden, but he didn’t run like one in the Derby, where, at odds of 70-1, he made the lead in deep stretch only to be passed by Golden Tempo and Renegade late. He was beaten one length.

Could he break his maiden in the Preakness?

Dixie Law Looks to Rule Ruling Angel Stakes at Woodbine

Dixie Law, a finalist for the 2025 champion 2-year-old female Sovereign Award, will face five foes in Saturday’s $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes Presented by Ketel One, at Woodbine.

Trained by Dale Desruisseaux for owner/breeder Garland Williamson, the bay had a stellar juvenile season, recording three wins from five starts, including impressive victories in the Mazarine Stakes (G3) and Cup & Saucer Stakes.

“Right from her very first few breezes, you could tell she had something special,” said Desruisseaux.
