Communicating in hospital

Interpreter use in an American pediatric ICU jumped from 7.6 minutes to 16.2 minutes a day when parents received a tablet for video interpretation in their child's room, a Hospital Pediatrics study found. Instructions in the family's language were affixed to the tablet.

Meanwhile, a study of 36 academic and community pediatric units across Canada found only 40 per cent had a formal process for identifying language needs, and only 19% flagged it in the electronic health record.
