We're still looking for the currently cat-less person out there who can offer our late artist friend Arlia Almond's Kino a loving, one-cat home. All he needs is an empty lap and an indoor spot to curl up for a day of napping and nature gazing. He has several years of experience living with an artist, reader, and fellow napper, and will bring his own toys and dishes. Email Julie Lounibos if you have any leads. JulieLounibos@gmail.com

NOTE FROM RIVERSIDE THEATRE:

Live in the Loop and The Comedy Zone Experience are taking a break this weekend, May 14 & 15. See You The Following Weekend!
Last ArtWalk at Seriously Mixed Media

I know from personal experience how difficult trying to be an artist and a business person at the same time can be, so I understand, but I'm sad to report the following from old friends.

After several years in downtown Ft. Pierce, Seriously Mixed Media will be closing its doors after ArtWalk on May 21st . This is a result of a mixture of both covid and the right time to “move on”. We hope to see many of you at this Art Walk to reminisce and say our goodbyes for now. It has been a pleasure connecting with you all through a shared interest in art.

We have been delighted and proud of the many artists who have exhibited here as resident and guest artists. We have had a good run but it is time to say “Adieu”. Thank you all for your patronage and interest in art. We have enjoyed sharing it with you – Seriously!

The First Presbyterian Youth String Orchestra will present a Spring Concert on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at 4:00pm in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach. Admission is free; $10 p/p suggested donation will be accepted.
Taking It Off at The Henegar
It's a hot ending to a tough 30th season at the Henegar in Melbourne. Executive Artistic Director Dominic Del Brocco said everyone there will be taking "a deep breath after a long year," and then get to work on "our epic 31st season."

It's been quite a year, he said, "and now it is time to 'expose' Melbourne to something unlike anything else we had this season." If you've seen The Full Monty in any form, more than likely it made a lasting impression on you. Del Brocco said, "In an effort to stay as true to the material as possible, the strapping lads cast in the production are not only excited to 'let it go' but actually insist on it."

The show is R rated but "beyond all the flesh and rip-away pants is an actual story about believing in yourself, honoring your commitments, and sacrifice." The cast is large, led mostly by the six featured men, Chris Fallows, Tad Kincade, Mitchel Burns, Eric Barnum, Donnie Gethers, and Chris Siciliano. Del Brocco added, "he Cast also includes some fantastic leading Lady performances by Mandy Kerridge, Kayla Canada, Torie D'Alessandro, and Karen Monks. Choreography is by Torie D'Alessandro, vocal direction by Karen Monks, costumes by Marcy Szymanski, and set design by Cliff Price.

The FULL MONTY runs for 3 weekends, socially distanced seats and masks are still required. An extra performance has been added but seats are filling fast.

From Lighthouse ArtCenter:

Textile Exhibition and Workshops will have you in Stitches
April 28 - May 27, 2021

Lighthouse ArtCenter inspires the senses with “Stitched,” an exhibition and workshops celebrating the art of textiles. Collections from textile artists will be on display, including Kirk Ke Wang’s “Landscape of Human Skins.” Ke Wang’s work incorporates abandoned pieces of clothing, or “skins,” left behind by humanity through a series of large-scale colorful, mixed-media collages. He utilizes clothing worn by refugees and others to create a story of meaningful, thought-provoking compositions. In contrast to these large-scale pieces, gallery visitors can explore the diversity of textile art through the work of several distinguished artists’ weavings, embroideries, quilts, tapestries and more. The exhibition is available in-person and virtually, with all textile art available for purchase. Admission is free to members and $5 for non-members. For more information, visit lighthousearts.org
“This exhibition is made for those among us who wrap ourselves in the soft embrace of beautiful fabrics, enhance our homes with texture and color, and luxuriate in the uncommon and well-made. Visitors to Stitched should come prepared to be thoroughly inspired by this carefully selected display of artists, designers and world-class makers,” says Curator, Janeen Mason.

Textile Workshops and Classes
“Stitched” can be enjoyed by the whole community and be especially inspiring for those who took comfort during the pandemic in knitting, embroidery, quilting and other tactile hobbies. The following textile workshops will be available for those interested in learning from some of the artists in the exhibition: Coiling with Fiber by Talia Cervetti, Meditative Hand Stitching with Allyson Daley, Embellished Book Making with Eco-Printing by Cindy Bartosek, Playful Pot of Blooms: A Still Life Fiber Collage with Susan Rienzo. Alma Lee Loy Community Appreciation Day at McKee
From McKee Botanical Garden:

This year McKee Botanical Garden is hosting its annual Community Appreciation Day in memory of Vero’s First Lady and a former board president, Alma Lee Loy with a special $1 admission on Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm. The last admission ticket is sold at 4 pm.

It was Alma Lee Loy who first started McKee’s Community Appreciation Day event in 2005 to give the community a chance to explore and discover the many wonders of McKee. We hope the community will take advantage of this opportunity to come see what the Garden is all about. This year marks the 20th Anniversary since reopening the Garden in 2001. When the Garden first opened, there were 700 visitors. This year we have already welcomed over 75,000 visitors to McKee and have been able to offer them a place of beauty where they could relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
16th Annual Waterlily Celebration – Saturday, June 19 from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm. The Garden is open early to allow visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the Garden to enjoy the night-blooming varieties before they retreat for the day and also enjoy the day-blooming varieties. McKee’s waterlily collection is one of the state’s largest with over 80 varieties and more than 300 potted and 100 free-range plants. Guests can purchase aquatic plants and bromeliads from our plant vendors, observe a waterlily repotting demonstration and have an opportunity to speak with our plant experts.
Admission: $15 Adults | $13 Seniors (65+)/Youth (13-17), $10 Children (2-12). McKee members and children under 2 free.

Children’s Garden is open from 10 am – 4:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday and Sunday, noon – 4:30 pm.

Vero Beach Theatre Guild's Unified Auditions
For those hoping to be cast in a Vero Beach Theatre Guild show next season, this notice from Artistic Director Jon Putzke will be important reading.
UNIFIED AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD MAY 16, 17 & 18 @ 7PM
The goals of the Unified Auditions:
  • By having all directors attend the Unified Auditions, they will get to see the entire pool of talent the Guild has to draw from.
  • Gives those actors who do audition and perform at other theatres in the area a platform in which to make a decision; to accept a Guild’s offer to be cast in a show, or not.
  • Once the Unified Auditions have taken place, the individual directors are free to cast any remaining roles by any method available to them.
  • That Dracula, Sleuth, Calendar Girls, I Do! I Do!, See How They Run and Native Gardensmight have at least 2 or 3 key roles cast so quality publicity photos for the entire season will meet media deadlines with costumed characters.

How the Unified Auditions will be conducted:
  • All 6 directors and our choreographer will be in the audition space all three nights the auditions are held. Because of being in production for “Moonlight & Magnolias” during this time, the auditions on Sunday and Monday will be in the theatre and Tuesday will be held on the second floor.
  • The casting team will sign in the auditionees, making sure their forms (which we will provide) are fully filled out; check to see they have brought their own resumes and head shots as requested. If they did not (?) the casting committee will take their photos upon registering.
  • The casting committee will make 6 copies of the registration form, the auditionees’ resumes and photos so each of the directors will have their own copies.
  •  Pending upon the turn out each evening, the casting team will admit no more than 6 auditionees into the audition space at a time. Auditionees should come prepared to either deliver a memorized or read a monologue between 60 and 90 seconds in length. (There will be no reading from the scripts at this time.) If you are auditioning for I Do! I Do! you must bring a CD track or MP3 of a song of your choice. No one may audition for the musical singing acapella. Once you are done your monologue or song, we will allow a few minutes for the directors to ask questions of the auditionees.
  • Once the six have been seen and interviewed, you will be dismissed and the next set will be brought in until all have been seen on that evening.
  • Some directors may ask you to please wait until the auditions have concluded that evening and will conduct a call back with you that evening.
How directors will see more and/or have you interact with each other using actual scenes from the script:
  • If a director does not hold a call back on the night of the Unified Auditions, each director will have scheduled a call back session with Lauretta (vbtgvolunteers@gmail.com) and reserved a space at the theatre for a later date.
  • The auditionees will be informed by the casting team about a requested call back within three days after the Unified Auditions. You will also be informed as to the date, time and location of those call backs.
  • If a director is unable to cast his or her show from the Unified Auditions, they will set up an open audition for all roles that are not cast approximately 2 weeks prior to when they plan to go into rehearsal.
The Directors are expected to cast those from the Unified Audition pool as quickly after the Unified Auditions as possible:
  • Directors will not keep auditionees dangling forever. If a director wishes to cast you, you will be contacted as soon as possible and lock down a commitment with you. It is the policy at the Guild that the casts (or portions thereof) are to be posted on the call board within 7 days of casting. This is the director’s or their stage manager’s responsibility.
  •  The directors themselves or the casting team will inform you if you have been cast or not within 7 days after the final audition/set of callbacks.
  •  Depending on the size of a cast; casting can be a very arduous task for any director. Please have patience with them. They will do their best to do it as quickly as possible without jeopardizing the quality of their production.
  •  According to the job description as written by the board of directors, the Artistic Director has final say in all casting before any calls are made committing people to a role or roles.

  • IMPORTANT: if you are auditioning for the musical “I Do! I Do!” you MUST come prepared to sing a song! Accompaniment track on CD is our first preference or mp3 from your phone through our cable to our speakers. If tracks are not available to you, we will match your voice to scales on the piano. No one auditioning for the musical may sing acapella.
  • In the event that not all roles in all shows are cast from the May 16, 17 & 18 auditions, each show will hold another audition approximately 6 weeks prior to its opening and the roles remaining to be cast will be clearly stated on the Guild’s website under the audition tab.

Scripts for the plays are available to be checked out at our box office Mondays through Fridays 10 am to 2 pm with a refundable deposit of $10. Perusal scripts checked out MUST be returned no later than 7 pm on May 16.

The most current and up-to-date information is available on our website at VeroBeachTheatreGuild.Com.

Student Workshops July 26 - August 7
A note came in from Sue Gromis, Main Street Vero Beach executive director, to let us know Downtown Friday was a success!

It went "really well: attendee numbers were down a bit from March, but the enthusiasm and interaction from the crowd was contagious (oooh: may be a poor choice of words...). It is good to be back!"

Looking ahead, Gromis said, "Xaque Gruber is the MSVB featured artist for May with his show 'Earth’s Natural Gifts.' Main Street is looking for guest artists for June-July-August, for our gallery wall at special summer rates."
Through the Eye of the Camera
From J. Marshall Adams, executive director of the Backus Museum and Gallery:

For more than two decades, The A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery has presented the popular juried photography competition Through the Eye of the Camera. This year's exhibition features 103 of the year’s best photographs from professional and amateur photographers alike.

This year there were 72 artists who submitted 179 entries in one of four new categories: (1) Animal subjects; (2) Flora & Landscape subjects; (3) People/Portrait subjects; or (4) Open, for subjects that are not included in the three major categories. There are no longer categories for how images are captured, manipulated, or how they are presented. In addition to Best of Show, Director’s Choice, People’s Choice, and 1st-2nd-3rd in the category awards, there is a new “Best Black & White Photograph” and “Best Film / Traditional RAW Photograph” awards.
The top 8 award winners for 2021 are:

  1. BEST OF SHOW – “Orange Splash” by Manuel Carela (Port St. Lucie)
  2. FIRST PLACE ANIMALS – “The Gift” by Joe Campanellie (Palm Coast)
  3. FIRST PLACE FLORA & LANDSCAPE – “The Way” by Susan Pantuso (Fort Pierce)
  4. FIRST PLACE PEOPLE/PORTRAIT – “The Relic” by Mark Smith (Port St. Lucie)
  5. FIRST PLACE OPEN – “Fork and Egg #2” by David Bence (Vero Beach)
  6. BEST BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH – “Running Free” by Joe Campanellie (Palm Coast)
  7. BEST FILM/TRADITIONAL RAW PHOTOGRAPH – “Golden Pod Series #7” by Jim Swallow (St. Petersburg)
  8. DIRECTOR’S CHOICE – “Easy Breezy” by Chris Schumacher (Vero Beach)

During the exhibition, on view through June 18, visitors are invited to share their own vote for their favorite work on display. The results will be counted for the annual "People’s Choice Award" given at the close of the exhibition.

A complete list of all the accepted entries and the award winning photographs is available online on the Museum's website at BackusMuseum.org
