Did you know?

When broken down, the names of places in Wales reveal hidden meanings....

Cardiff

This contemporary English name finds its roots in the medieval Welsh word, Caerdyf. It is a straightforward combination of Caer, meaning "fort," and a version of the river name Taf, or Taff in English. Cardiff is home to a majestic 11th century castle, and the city itself is situated along the banks of the River Taff. It comes as no surprise that these two sights will be the highlights of your stay in the capital.

Aberystwyth

"Aber what? Aberystwyth!" Believe it or not, its meaning is much simpler than its pronunciation. Aber literally means "mouth of a river," and Ystwyth is a river name. So, Aberystwyth translates to "mouth of the river Ystwyth." How uncomplicated is that?
