Aerial Antics' Mother and Daughter

City of Vero Beach Assistant Recreation Director Patty Howard has been involved with the city's gymnastics program since she was a tot, just three or four years old. When she reached fifth grade, she said, an interest in dance took over, "so I enrolled in Chris Sexton's dance classes and danced with Chris until I went to college (Methodist University)."

As a freshman, Howard was on the Varsity Cheer Team until her love for dance took over and she switched to the dance team for the remaining years at school. After graduating, she was offered the position of gymnastics coordinator for the city and for the past 19 years has been assistant recreation director for the City of Vero Beach but has remained "heavily involved with the Aerial Antics Youth Circus throughout my career. Teaching our amazing students and creating our spectacular productions makes me very happy!"

Bringing her daughter, Piper Kendrick, into the program was an easy decision. "She showed signs of gymnastics ability at an early age. Our program is fun and exciting and educational and strength building and self-esteem promoting - all of the things you want for your child!.

"Piper is a very determined little girl. She sets goals for herself and doesn't stop until she reaches them. She started with forward rolls and can now perform standing back tucks."

"The gymnastics kids in our program progress at their own individual level. The coaches are trained to recognize skill progression in each child and their criteria is adjusted accordingly. We maintain a 1:5 staff to student ratio in every class. Students are grouped according to ability level so coaches can focus on goal achievement."

"The aerial program is a little different. Generally, the younger students focus on introduction to trapeze, hoop, triple trapeze, wheel, triangle and rings. When their strength has developed (usually between 10 - 12 yrs. old) we will introduce the loops, perch, web, cloud and silks."

"Piper and I definitely make up partner acrobatic and dance routines at home for fun. As for performing - I am retired from performing but I love to watch her!"

While classes and programs are held at Leisure Square, the 49th Annual Aerial Antics Youth Circus will be held at Saint Edward’s School August 3 - 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Aerial Antics Youth Circus are $8 for adults and $7 for children and seniors. Children under 5 are admitted free. A multi-show pass is available for those who want to attend multiple shows. To purchase tickets in advance, please go to Leisure Square, 3705 16th Street, Vero Beach.

What are You Reading This Summer?

Between learning to crochet and trying to catch up on my reading (so many books, so little time!), this is an unusually busy summer.

There are books upon books, mostly mysteries and thrillers, in the piles that have spilled over onto the sofa and every available flat surface that I am forced to admit I'll never get to them all. So, how about recommendations from Arts Blast readers? I'm giving a thumbs up to Sabine Durrant's Sun Damage: "Equal parts glamorous, clever, and riveting, SUN DAMAGE is the perfect sizzling summer page-turner." HarperCollins Publishers
