Arts Updates, Interviews, Calendar, Calls for Artists and Volunteers, Auditions --- It's All Here in Arts Blast, Arts Blast on the Air, and on Facebook. | Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere
Volume 6 No. 38 | September 20, 2024
Notes from the Editor:
It started out as an ordinary, pre-season week with nothing much on my schedule. Then I got a little too relaxed and started copying one day's chores and pasting them onto the next day. Now here it is Friday and I don't have to tell you what that calendar block looks like. Or am I the only one who's done that?
Being prepared for an Arts Blast season means creating spreadsheets and folders for photos and press releases. Updating contact info, double checking arts schedules, tracking down interviews, organizing details --- getting ready is a lot of work but it's fun and exciting. And suddenly, we're off and running! Keep an eye on the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com.
This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

If you're responsible for promoting an arts-related event, send in details using the format at the end of this email. There's no charge for basic calendar listings but your advertising flyer that includes a link to your website will do more to catch readers' attention. Email for advertising information in Arts Blast and Arts Blast on the Air.
Please support small, local businesses. Arts Blast is one of them, so if you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, consider advertising it in Arts Blast and/or Arts Blast on the Air!

September is National Literacy Month, not to be confused with National March Into Literacy Month, celebrated on March 1, or National Reading Month, also March. Yes, I've been hitting the Google button again.
Any day or any month is a good time to "read to the children in your life or dive into a new book yourself," according to CNN. If you need suggestions, CNN journalists shared some of their favorites. Arts Blast sponsor Cheryl Andrews loaned me the new Clinton/Penny novel as I dug deep into my dusty stacks for a couple of favorites to share with her. Have you read Snow Falling on Cedars? Sooo much better than the movie.
Come back next week for a Brad Meltzer feature. He's been one of my favorite authors since my first interview with him for his early thriller, The Tenth Justice, about 25 years ago (yikes!) He reports that he has something new out plus something new on the way. If you haven't discovered the broad range of Brad's interests, start here or here.

Meet New Sponsor, Old Friend Cheryl Andrews
For those who wonder if ads are actually noticed, listen to this. Back in the '80s, I met Cheryl Andrews through her Miami marketing firm's relationship with the USVI resort I was working for. We lost touch after my departure in 1990 --- until she emailed me late last year.
While waiting for the curtain to go up at Riverside Theatre, the Vero Beach resident (!) saw an ad in the program for Willi Miller's Arts Blast. And now we meet for coffee every Tuesday morning, picking up right where we left off, sharing our tales of the Caribbean! It pays to advertise!

Hot Off the Press from the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation:
On Friday Sept 27th at 4:30, we'll be holding a book launch party at the Pole Barn. Our newly-minted authors will be celebrated with their families, teachers, and LRJF staff and volunteers, plus a group of generous individuals who provided scholarships to help send kids to our camp. Quail Valley Charities and the Mardy Fish Foundation also provided generous grants. Come by the party to help us celebrate all these great kids and their adult supporters.
The kids did the writing. Publishing a book takes a lot of effort beyond that. Brianna Cimoch, our summer intern, was responsible for the formatting and the cover she designed as an unexpected surprise for us. She is back at the University of Wisconsin and won't be at the party, but deserves kudos for her work on the book. You're amazing, Brianna!

Most of our Adult Writing Groups take a break during the summer. Have you been thinking of joining one? Your muse is calling! Enter your information here and we'll get back to you ASAP.
Coming later this season:
FOR CHILDREN: Kids Write Outside, writing activities for kids ages 3-11, will take place in the Pole Barn at the Historic House. The first program is in November.
FOR TEENS: Workshops on Science Fiction/Fantasy and Spoken Word Poetry are coming in early 2025.
FOR ADULTS: A book fair and panel on publishing your own work will take place in December. Meet us in the Writing Center on First Fridays in November and December for two evenings of celebration for writers. We'll talk with two scholars of Laura's work in January and have an Adult Workshop for Nonfiction writing in February. Our poets are putting out a book in March and April brings the 14th Annual Poetry & BBQ. NOTE: writing groups meet throughout the year.

Message from Mike Block:
As many of you may remember, in 2020 I started the non-profit organization PLAY FOR THE VOTE, which organizes musical performances at polling locations on Election Day. Our non-partisan goal is to make voting a more positive experience for everyone. using the power of music to build community and amplify voter turnout.
If you, or anyone you know, is a musician, please help us spread the word and get musicians to sign up to perform on November 5th!

Stories in Stone By ZOTO Debuts October 1
Bok Tower Gardens and master stone balancer Adam Conard, also known as the artist ZOTO, will present the first full campus exhibition of stone balances October 1 through November 30, 2024.
Stories in Stone features 25 mind-bending stone balances housed in beautiful areas of the gardens.
A Rich History of Stone as an Art Form
This show connects the rich heritage of Lee Lawrie's stone sculptures to the bold artistic expression of modern stone balances. Through this collaboration, the exhibit encourages visitors to discover the importance of finding balance in life and prioritizing physical and mental health.
Stories in Stone will be displayed throughout the Olmsted Gardens and around The Singing Tower, juxtaposing Lawrie's traditional stone carvings and sculptures with ZOTO's balances.
he Past Comes Alive in Stone
Stories in Stone will captivate the young and young-at-heart using natural stones and historic marble leftover from The Singing Tower's construction nearly 100 years ago.
| |
"It's quite possible a random stone you see has been around for many millennia, withstood unfathomable environmental changes, used to build magnificent towers and monuments, or used in countless other ways to enhance our lives," said ZOTO when asked about the show's materials.
ZOTO most recently produced an exhibit at McKee Gardens in Vero Beach captivating South Florida with his unique art form. The show at Bok Tower Gardens will be ZOTO's third garden exhibit in Florida.
"My art walks the razor's edge between what is possible and what is not; the closer I get to the impossible, the closer I get to my goal of being in lockstep with the Earth. As a viewer, you are invited to become more open to possibilities within yourself and ponder how, together, you can become more connected to our shared home, Earth," said ZOTO when asked about his distictive art form.
