Beginning this month, you may have noticed we are changing the format of our newsletters and how we deliver our information. It bears repeating that your feedback matters to us, and we want to ensure we effectively communicate with our membership, including updating our communication strategy from time to time. To that end, we will launch two distinct newsletters designed to better meet your needs.

Our first Chamber Connections communication, which will be sent at the beginning of the month, will focus exclusively on events (ensuring you never miss out on networking opportunities), member education, and community gatherings. This is your chance to stay informed about everything happening at the Chamber and allow you the opportunity to register immediately so you can connect with fellow members and engage with our vibrant business community.

The second newsletter will serve as an essential resource for Chamber business updates and highlight significant events taking place at the Chamber. You'll find insights into our member education initiatives, strategic planning updates, and key announcements, such as grant opportunities that could be crucial for your business operations and growth. We believe this new format will keep you up to date, and informed.

Next month, the Small Business Administration will be hosting Small Business Week May 4th - May 10th. The Chamber is using our social media platforms to remind our members and the community of our wonderful small businesses throughout our region and encourage you to support our local businesses. It is also the perfect time to remind you about the upcoming Small Business Awards Luncheon and Showcase taking place on June 25th. Due to the incredible growth of this event, we have relocated to the Buffalo Marriott Niagara to support more businesses who participate in our showcase. We are still currently accepting nominations, so if you know a deserving small business or individual, be sure to submit your nomination before the deadline. Let's celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our community!

In addition to these updates, we are closely following the progress of the New York State budget discussions. The New York State Budget is... READ MORE

4 Questions to Ask Yourself as You Age

While no one wants to think about going it alone as they age, you should be prepared in case you find yourself in that situation. Researchers estimate about 22 percent of Americans are at high risk of aging without a family member or caretaker looking after their needs.

Ask yourself these four questions to make sure you’re prepared:

1.     Am I financially prepared? Start saving now for things like medical expenses, home repair and housework. You may want to consider long-term care insurance. This can help you pay for medical equipment, assisted living and aides.

2.     Who will be my support system? Surround yourself with people you can rely on, like relatives, friends and neighbors. These are people who will act as pillars of support for you, especially in difficult times.

3.     Where do I want to live long-term? You may want to stay in your home, but can you live there alone long-term? Think about whether you want to live near people your age, how you want to get around and if you’d like to be close to social opportunities.

4.     Are my health care wishes known? Advance directives, such as a health care proxy, make sure that your health care wishes are known to others. Think about what you want and write it down—you want to be very clear. Pick someone you trust to be your health care agent. He or she can then make medical decisions on your behalf if you lose the ability to do so.

Complete a health care proxy today!

As a way to help encourage Americans to make plans in advance of any health crises that may occur in the future, National Healthcare Decisions Day is held every April 16. More than 90 percent of Americans say talking with their loved ones about end-of-life care is important, but only 32 percent have had such a conversation. Therefore, now is the perfect time to complete a health care proxy form if you have yet to do so. You can download this form by visiting the Independent Health website.
