Stock options and equity compensation can create significant tax consequences, but the rules are often difficult for both tax professionals and clients to visualize. This course makes stock options and related equity-planning concepts easier to understand through visuals, storytelling, and practical client scenarios. Participants will follow transactions from grant through exercise and sale to see when ordinary income, capital gain, Alternative Minimum Tax, and other tax consequences arise.
The course covers Incentive Stock Options (ISOs), Alternative Minimum Tax and the AMT credit, Non-statutory Stock Options (NSOs), Section 83(b) elections, and Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS). Each topic is presented through practical situations designed to show not only how the tax rules work, but how different client decisions can produce significantly different tax outcomes.
The course also emphasizes tax planning and client communication. Participants will learn how to recognize opportunities before transactions occur and use visual explanations and storytelling to make complicated equity-compensation concepts easier for clients to understand.
