Native plants are those that occur naturally in a region in which they evolved. Because native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, they require far less water, saving time and money, while supporting biodiversity and natural pollinators. Native plants also provide an intrinsic habitat for birds and other species of wildlife as well.
To create a natural habitat garden using native plants, begin by minimizing turf areas to reduce water consumption then begin proper soil preparation such as adding compost in appropriate areas critical to water conservation.
Next, search for and determine the plants which are native to your region.
Finally, visit your local nursery for questions on planting native perennials, mulching garden beds, adding hardscaping, or building a rock garden. To learn more go to audubon.org and search "Why Native Plants Matter."
