Stop Watering Your Yard When it Rains

Suspend Irrigation When Showers Forecast

Rain downpour of lush green backyard.

The Marina Coast Water District reminds you that rainy weather is upon us, making it a great time to turn off your irrigation system.

Watering your lawn and plants is not necessary when nature is doing it for you. Please observe the weather forecast, and turn off your lawn and landscape irrigation when it rains. Check your landscape before turning your irrigation back on – you may not need to irrigate for weeks or months in this cool, wet weather. Help conserve water.

How to Dispose of Sharps

Correctly Dispose of Used Needles and Syringes

Obtain a SHARPS container from your local pharmacy or HHW location. Discard used or exposed needles, syringes, and lancets in the SHARPS container. When the SHARPS container is 2/3 full... ...dispose of the container at an approved disposal location.

Sharps is a medical term for devices with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut skin. They may be used at home, at work, or while traveling to manage the medical conditions of people or their pets. When disposing of sharps, don't throw them into the trash or toilet, put them in your recycling bin, or attempt to remove the needle yourself.

The best way to dispose of used needles and other sharps is to:

  1. Obtain a SHARPS container from your local pharmacy or HHW location.
  2. Discard used or exposed needles, syringes, and lancets in the SHARPS container.
  3. When the SHARPS container is 2/3 full...
  4. ...dispose of the container at an approved disposal location.

Save Water With Natural Habitat Landscaping

How Native Plants Help the Environment

Beautiful natural habitat garden with rock creek.

Native plants are those that occur naturally in a region in which they evolved. Because native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, they require far less water, saving time and money, while supporting biodiversity and natural pollinators. Native plants also provide an intrinsic habitat for birds and other species of wildlife as well.

To create a natural habitat garden using native plants, begin by minimizing turf areas to reduce water consumption then begin proper soil preparation such as adding compost in appropriate areas critical to water conservation.

Next, search for and determine the plants which are native to your region.

Finally, visit your local nursery for questions on planting native perennials, mulching garden beds, adding hardscaping, or building a rock garden. To learn more go to audubon.org and search "Why Native Plants Matter."
