APRIL NEWSLETTER
Greetings!

We miss you!

Its been quite an adventure so far, hasn’t it? Even though we’ve had to close our doors to walk-in traffic, at present we are still in our stores Monday through Saturday, between 10 am – 4 pm, taking phone orders, answering emails and on-line orders. We’re doing “outside the door” no-touch deliveries and home deliveries (within 10 km) for those of you who can’t come out.

And we’re keeping company with some great books! This is the time when people need books! Watching the news can be soul destroying after awhile. So for our mental health’s sake, we need books to take us to places we’d rather be right now.

We want to thank you so much for your continuing support. We love nothing better than connecting readers with good writing and great stories, sending books out the door to their new homes. So please keep on supporting us, by ordering books, buying gift cards, following us on Facebook and Instagram, and going regularly to our on-line store (over 8 million titles) to browse.

And check out below for some fantastic ideas of things to do while you are staying home. We have lots of adult colouring books and coloured pencils, puzzles, and crossword and Sudoku books.

We want to give a big shout-out to our incredible team of booksellers who are hanging in with us. We honestly can’t do it without them.

With grateful hearts for all your support,

Be safe.

ANTONIA'S PICK

A House in the Mountains:
The Women who Liberated Italy from Fascism
by Caroline Moorehead

This is the fascinating story of the "staffetta," the lioness-hearted bicycle messengers of northern Italy, and the courageous, unshakable, tireless anti-fascist women that sacrificed everything to liberate their country from the violent claws of war, hate, and torment. This book will set your heart afire. A true testament to the invincible spirit of integrity, bravery, sacrifice, and love.

Slashburner: Hot Times in the British Columbia Woods
by Nick Raeside

Nanoose Bay writer Nick Raeside has penned a unique series of anecdotal tales, regaling us with behind the scenes stories of controlled forest fires to burn debris after logging. It's a tale of the good old times in the logging industry in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's told with madcap humour. After reading Nick's story, I am amazed he survived!

The Brideship Wife
by Leslie Howard

My husband Tom’s great-grandmother, Sarah Lovegrove (1839-1917) was one of the 60 young English women who sailed on the brideship HMS Tynemouth in 1862 from Dartmouth, Devon to the Colony of Victoria. These impoverished women, whose only option was to find a husband, embarked upon a dangerous voyage and came to the British Columbia goldfields to make a better life for themselves. This beautifully written historical fiction by Penticton author Leslie Howard, is based on the true story of this forgotten chapter in our province’s history. I loved this saga about class and racial biases, political treachery, finding love, and these women’s struggles to find independence in a new land.

MARIANNE'S PICK

Dear Edward
by Ann Napolitano

Dear Edward is the touching story of a young boy whose life is inexplicably changed when he is the sole survivor of a plane crash that kills 183 other people, including his family.

Edward's survival raises many difficult questions for both himself, and the loved ones of those who were lost. These complex questions, along with themes of survival and coming-of-age, create a surprisingly optimistic story.

The author skillfully conveys all the messiness and complexity of the situation, while creating and maintaining a narrative with innocence and tenderness. This book will leave you feeling better off for having read it.
JAN'S STAFF PICK
Europe: A Natural History
by Tim Flannery

A fascinating view of Europe's flora and fauna through it's geology, anthropology, and mostly, it's fossil record. The author paints a vivid picture of times and creatures, some long past, some with modern day descendants.
