Spring has finally arrived and with it, our programs
are in full swing!
Several new sites, long-time site partners, and diverse groups are coming together across communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in Spanish and in English. I'm delighted to share some recent photos are stories.
Princeton Community Housing
At Harriet Bryan House in Princeton, the latest 8-week program is underway with a full and engaged group. Participants gather closely, listening, reflecting, and sharing in the way that defines every People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos program.
The current "Crossing Borders" program at Harriet Bryan House (photos at top left and right) is made possible in part thanks to funding provided by Princeton Community Housing, whose commitment to its residents and larger Princeton community allows this meaningful work to unfold.
We recently welcomed Stella Baldwin, Program Officer: Literature, Media Arts, Music from New Jersey State Council on the Arts to sit in at HBH. We are extremely grateful to NJSCA for its sustaining support of P&S/GyC. The Father Center
At The Father Center in Trenton, an exciting spring program is underway, led by coordinator Teresa Leary. TFC Program Manager Yanira Medina recently sent me a message with photos (seen above, at lower left and right) expressing gratitude for the program:
The enthusiasm from the group was noticeable...
As you can see... we had so many participants, all actively involved and sharing their thoughts.
It’s always a pleasure to witness such engagement and enthusiasm.
Thank you once again for providing us with such a wonderful program.
I look forward to future sessions and continuing this fantastic program.
Watch & Revisit "Notable Words"
If you were unable to join us on March 7, or would simply like to enjoy Susan Choi's wonderful presentation and discussion of her novel Flashlight again, we’re delighted to share the video from our Notable Words: In the Afternoon Light with Susan Choi thoughtfully created by our talented friends at Princeton Theological Seminary.
It truly was a luminous afternoon and we are so thankful to Susan Choi and all who made the afternoon so special and such a success!
State of the Arts
In the coming weeks, we are honored and excited to be welcoming a documentary filmmaker from the award-winning State of the Arts, filming at several of our program sites—across northern, central, and southern New Jersey, in both Spanish and English. P&S/GyC has been the subject of State of the Arts in its past, and the filmmaker has said he has a vision for its present, while paying homage to earlier filmmakers' work.
The short film is to be released later this spring, offering a wider view into a few of the programs in communities we serve—how a literary short story, read aloud, creates space for reflection, connection, and potential to transform lives.
You're invited!
You're invited to sit in and experience one of our upcoming "Try It" or "Crossing Borders" sessions open to the public in Princeton or Trenton. Visit our website to register for this month's offerings: https://www.peopleandstories.org/upcoming-events
Stay tuned for our special “Try It” event in the gardens at Morven Museum & Garden in Princeton, NJ set for July 23 at 6:30 pm.
Details coming soon!
What happens in these spaces, in these circles, stays with people -
and moves with them, often farther than we can see.
Across communities, the circle widens -
from one voice to another,
one story to the next.
Rainer Maria Rilke writes:
I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one,
but I give myself to it.
Thank you for being part of our circle - and for helping it widen!
With many warm hugs,
Debra
