Paterson History Inspires Menu Served to Mayor
Eva's culinary students prepared and served a four-course meal, inspired by local history, to Paterson's Mayor Sayegh and guests this spring. Giacomo DeStefano, Director of The Paterson Museum, presented slides explaining the historical references behind each dish. An 'amuse-bouche' of corn, squash and beans referenced the region's Native American culture; a charcuterie board re-imagined the historic picnic at the Falls shared by Washington, Lafayette and Hamilton; a submarine sandwich honored local engineer John Holland, who designed the Navy's first submarine; and a 'prehnite' cake celebrated this rare gemstone, mined in Paterson. Helping Moms in Recovery Return to Work
“I help women in recovery, who are pregnant or have just given birth, envision career paths that will lead to self-sufficiency," explains Judith Pasko, Eva’s Employment Specialist. She draws on past experience as a teacher and tutor to help new moms and mothers-to-be identify and work towards career paths with growth potential. These moms live with their infants in Eva’s Hope Residence while they focus on addiction recovery. Pasko guides them towards resources to strengthen and build job skills and encourages them to support each other. Judith Pasko (L) shown with a client and her son.
NJ Bankers Association Teams Support Eva's
We are grateful for our charitable partnership with the NJ Bankers Association. They have introduced us to many member banks who have chosen to give back to our community by volunteering and donating at Eva's: running donation drives; sponsoring and serving meals in our Community Kitchen; and conducting mock job fairs for Halfway House clients in our Workforce Development Program. Find out more about volunteering at Eva's.
Our Manager, Corporate & Foundation Relations, Marie Caliendo, received in-kind donations and a check at the Association's 'Women in Banking' Conference.
New Life & New Hope Abounds at Eva's Village
We welcomed 18 new babies - born to mothers in our halfway house and outpatient addiction recovery programs over the last nine months. Eight more babies are expected to arrive before summer's end. Opioid-dependent mothers and their newborns are at high risk for complications before, during, and after a birth. Two new, state-funded grant programs enhance the care and services we provide for these moms and their babies. Read more about the comprehensive care we offer mothers in recovery and their children.
