Winter Wonders and Holiday Joy
December 21, 2023
Dear Friends,
As I write this, the last rays of the winter solstice sun are dipping below the horizon. Tomorrow brings the promise of more light. I have always loved the peace of winter, and the promise it holds for spring to come.
At this time of year, as we come together to celebrate the season—sharing faith, cultural, and family traditions—we reflect on the past and look toward a New Year with expectation.
I’m sure most all Alaskans have been asked by friends and relatives in the lower forty-eight, “How do you deal with all the darkness?” The answers no doubt vary, but for me it has always been an opportunity to look for the light—from the wonder of getting to see the dawn every day, to appreciating the varied light displays on trees, homes and businesses, to witnessing the immense light that comes from within those I interact with every day, each working to make the world a more vibrant, compassionate, and accepting place.
In the darkness of night, the stars light up the sky—and we are awed by the beauty. I hope each of you have moments this holiday season to appreciate the light, joy, and love that comes to each one of us in so many ways, brightening our path and preparing us for the journey of a New Year, filled with promise and Hope.
Wishing joy-filled moments for each of you this holiday season.
