October 2023 Newsletter

Celebrating Community Impact

Hope’s annual Gala, commemorating our 55th anniversary as an organization serving Alaskans who experience disabilities, took place on October 7. The great enthusiasm and support from our community, our generous event sponsors, and the help of more than 30 volunteers made it a night to remember.

The proceeds of the Gala will have a powerful impact, as they will provide your friends, neighbors, and community members who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities the resources and opportunities to lead full and meaningful lives. Hope will channel the funds towards empowering the youth and young adults in the community through a range of educational activities, inclusive recreational programs, and structured engagement opportunities. We will also provide access to outdoor activities and Alaskan adventures, and promote safe, accessible, and affordable housing for everyone. Your support and active involvement exemplifies the spirit of unity and generosity that we love about our great state and will directly benefit the lives of many within the disability community and beyond.

We were honored to recognize two exceptional individuals for their outstanding contributions. Jason Kimmel, the owner of Peppercini’s Deli and Catering, received the 'Outstanding Community Partnership Award' for his unwavering support for non-profits and community organizations. Susan Woods was honored with the '2023 Journey Award' for her remarkable resilience and advocacy for herself and others, demonstrating the power of determination and self-belief.

Thank you again to our event sponsors, volunteers, and attendees for making this year's Gala an evening of celebrations, entertainment, and partnerships. We are honored to continue our mission of building bridges for meaningful lives and look forward to continuing our journey of making a positive impact throughout Alaska.

First National Bank Alaska Centennial Scholarship Fund

The First National Bank Alaska Centennial Scholarship Fund, generously supported by grant funding from First National Bank of Alaska, is an initiative aimed at providing scholarship funding for Alaskans with disabilities who lack traditional sources of funding to have access to enriching recreational and therapeutic programs. This fund will help remove the barrier of lack of funding for individuals and families in need of support. Please consider making a donation to Hope and allocating your gift to the First National Bank Alaska Centennial Scholarship Fund.

Sharon Miranda,

Lifetime Achievement Award

Congratulations to Sharon Miranda for receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Department of Labor and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) for her impact in the Deaf community and dedication to serving Deaf Alaskans statewide for over 30 years. Sharon is Hope's Coordinator of Deaf Supports and has been an invaluable part of our team since 2016.

The award, presented to her by Duane Mayes, Director of Alaska DVR, states, "Many organizations serving deaf Alaskans in crisis call on Sharon and when they do, they appreciate the depth of her knowledge, integrity, and determination with the Deaf individual's needs at the forefront. I have yet to meet any Deaf professional in my career with the level of resolve she has to make a difference."

The cost of poor sleep is much greater than many people think. Treating sleep as a priority, rather than a luxury, is one of the most important steps we can take to maintain good health.
