Stories of Hope

September 2023 Newsletter

The glue that holds us together

This month, we had the privilege of celebrating our incredible team of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) during DSP Recognition Week. Our DSPs play the most vital role in building bridges for individuals with disabilities to lead full and meaningful lives, and it was important for us to take a moment to recognize and honor their dedication, compassion, and support.

Throughout the week, we showed our appreciation for our DSPs in many ways. Every DSP received a heartfelt card expressing our gratitude for their hard work and commitment. We introduced and showcased a handful of our great DSPs on Hope’s social media, acknowledging the incredible impact they have on the lives of the individuals and families who choose our services.

To add to the excitement, 50 DSPs won gift card prizes, and we held a team photo contest where DSP teams had the chance to win a team party. DSPs who stopped by our main office in Anchorage were greeted by a ‘DSPs Rock’ banner and goody bags.

Our Board of Directors, Senior Leadership team, directors, supervisors, and regions also took time to show appreciation to our DSPs, including in our all-agency meetings, phone calls, and video messages. We also encouraged community members to send in stories and memories they have of our DSPs.

DSP Recognition Week is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to our DSPs and show intentional appreciation, but we are grateful for our DSPs every day, all year, every year. They are the glue that holds Hope together, and we couldn’t do what we do without their commitment and dedication.

Because of this, we ask you to please join us in showing much-deserved appreciation to our DSPs year-round. If and when one of our DSPs makes a meaningful impact in your life or the lives of your loved oneswhether it's a heartwarming anecdote, an uplifting story, or an expression of gratitudeplease share your positive experiences on our dedicated webpage for DSPs.

Happy 10-year Hope Anniversary, Hope!

This is Hope Andruss, a Lead DSP with our Kenai team, and this month was her 10-year anniversary with Hope! Hope is an amazing employee and cherished member of her team. Aside from being efficient, organized, and knowledgeable, she is a wonderful leader and advocate. She does a great job leading her team while also letting everyone know that she genuinely cares about them. She has a huge smile, infectious laugh, and is one tough cookie! She knows how to get things done and her team and supervisor know they can depend on her to carry out any task or project from start to finish. Her team, coworkers, and the individuals she supports love Hope, which is apparent when you see her at any gathering. She's the life of the party!

Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October was designated as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in the 1980s. Let's spend this month uplifting and celebrating all the beautiful individuals with Down syndrome and educate ourselves and others about it so we can break down the barriers and stigmas that still exist. By doing so, we create a more compassionate and inclusive world for everyone.

Disability Employment Awareness Month

Also observed each October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. Let's raise awareness about the importance of creating a work environment that welcomes employees with disabilities.
