Storm Prep and Furry Friends

When Hampton Roads gets saturation from rain and wind, we almost always get calls for storm damage. Not removing potentially dangerous trees can have serious consequences for neighborhoods, especially during storm season. Taking action before the storms hit can prevent these issues and keep our neighborhoods safer and more resilient.

13NewsNow spent time with us last month as we worked to clear potential hazards before Helene could get to them first. Check out the news story here.๏ปฟ

Raking Leaves and Tree Health: Signs to Look For

โ€Š

Fall is a beautiful time of year, but it also means raking up piles of leaves. As you're gathering leaves, itโ€™s the perfect opportunity to take a few moments to inspect your trees for potential health issues. Here are some signs to look for that might indicate you need to call a professional tree service like Arbor Experts:

1. Dead Limbs and Branches

Dead limbs and branches are often hidden under a layer of leaves, but youโ€™ll find them when you start raking your yard. An excessive number of branches in one area signals that a nearby tree may have health issues.

2. Lack of Leaves Around the Base

Healthy trees should have a good amount of leaves around their base. If you notice a bare patch or fewer leaves around a tree than its neighbors, it could be a sign that the tree is dead or has a significant problem. This could be due to root rot, insect damage, or other underlying issues.

Regardless, itโ€™s a sign that the tree needs a closer look. If the leaves havenโ€™t fallen yet, you can look up to identify trees with large limbs that donโ€™t have leaves at all - those are likely dead and may indicate a more significant health issue with the tree.

3. Large Holes in the Tree Trunk

Holes or openings in the tree trunk can signify decay or insect infestation. Both situations can weaken the tree's structure and make it more susceptible to falling in a storm or during high winds. Contact a tree service with a certified arborist for an inspection if you see any large or unusual holes.

4. Leaning or Tilted Trees

A leaning or tilted tree trunk often indicates structural weakness or root problems. This could be due to decay, storm damage, or soil erosion. If you notice a tree leaning significantly, have it inspected by a professional, particularly if the treeโ€™s lean is getting more severe or obvious.

5. Cankers and Galls

Cankers are sunken, discolored areas on the bark of a tree. Galls are abnormal growths on the tree. Both can be signs of disease or insect damage. If you see cankers or galls, it's a good idea to consult with a tree care expert. Early identification gives you more options, and itโ€™s always better to proactively deal with tree issues.

Paying attention to these and similar signs will help you ensure the health and safety of your trees. If you have any concerns about trees on your property, please contact the Arbor Experts team for a professional consultation by a certified arborist.
