Summer Reading 2021
The 2021 summer reading theme is Tails and Tales! This summer, we encourage you to explore the world of life around us and find out what is special about so many of the animals who live with us on our little blue planet.

For example, did you know a snail can sleep for three years at a time? The Library will be open this summer, but most programs will be offered virtually on platforms such as Zoom, Discord, and/or the City’s social media accounts, and some may require registration to receive an invite. This information will be noted on the library’s summer reading calendar available now.

Along with virtual programming, we will offer a goal-based reading program to help the community build, maintain and increase reading skills and build knowledge.

We are using an internet-based system called Reader Zone, which is an app that can be downloaded and used to log all reading.

Once downloaded, enter in our special program code v436r, and you will be registered. Reader Zone participants can start logging their books or minutes starting on June 1. Materials read prior to June 1 do not count for this program.

Prizes for completing the reading goal will be given out in early August. We hope you will join us for another exciting summer reading program and learn a tale or two about different animals!
Puppet show storytime episode 1: Jamberry
Summer is here and animal adventure storytimes are here, too. Ms. Jodi is joined by librarian Jean Hurst AND Neptune the Turtle for a very special animal adventure storytime! Hear about how Neptune was given to the library!

Grab your favorite puppet and/or stuffed animal, bring your imagination and read along.

These storytimes are prerecorded and available on La Vista’s social media platforms.
Library hosting Makerspace
The Library is hosting a makerspace studio, featuring equipment such as a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, 3D printer, embroidery machine, heat press, CNC router and a laminator. The studio also includes:
  • Lego Mindstorm kit
  • Button maker
  • Audio/music recording kit
  • Camera/video/green screen kit

The equipment in the studio is available for use at no charge. However, makers will need to pay for any consumables used in the making process. A variety of materials are available for purchase according to the Consumables Pricing Schedule posted in the Library.

The Library Innovation Studio Project is available through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Nebraska Library Commission. Its goal is to empower communities with the tools and guidance to explore, collaborate, create, learn and invent through participatory learning experiences.

The makerspace studio will be open select days and hours while it is in
La Vista. Please contact the Library at 402.537.3900 for more information.
