I am really excited to announce that Ian Moore will be at Strange Brew on July 12th at 8pm. Ian is a personal favorite of mine for many reasons, but mostly for his music. He is an incredible songwriter, singer and guitarist. He is a triple threat! Ian played Strange Brew's grand opening party, there were about 40 people there and it was crammed packed because in those days we didn't have a big stage or a big venue! All we had was the little tiny stage in the cafe area. (See Video Below) He was the first artist to play in the big room this last December. For that show, Ian showed up at 4pm to load in and sound check and I was on a ladder installing the cables from the stage to the sound booth, and there were tools and materials all over the floor and he looked up and said, "uh....... are we going to make it?" We did make it by only a few minutes before we had to open the doors to the 150+ people that were waiting to see him and a few more that were turned away because it was sold out.
At that point I had seen Ian play around 20 times in my life and what was great about it was that, for me it was the best performance of his that I had ever seen and his brother who has seen him 100's of times, agreed with me. Ian has opened for Bob Dylan, ZZ Top and the Rolling Stones and has played guitar for Jason Maraz and Roky Erickson, just to name a few! He told me when he played our grand opening that he played his heart out whether there were 5 people or 50 thousand people in front of him and I have to agree, I have never seen a less than awesome performance by Ian.
Another reason I am excited about this performance is because I didn't think he was going to be able to play at Strange Brew this year because of scheduling conflicts. It turns out we had a band cancel for July 12th, so I looked at Ian's schedule on his website and saw that he was going to be in Tulsa today, the 30th. I almost didn't ask, because I didn't want to pester him, but thought it never hurts to ask and he can't say yes if I don't give him the chance. Needless to say I was thrilled when he said he would fly in from Seattle just to play the show! As you can imagine, I have seen 100's of really great shows at Strange Brew and this one ranks as the best one ever!
This show will sell out! If you have never seen Ian, check out the video below, if you have seen Ian, but not acoustic, do yourself a favor and do it. He plays many of the songs you know, just in a different yet equally amazing way. GET TICKETS HERE and if you have never seen Ian and you take a chance on my recommendation, and you don't think it was worth every dime, come tell me and I will give you a refund!

In other news, we are moving to a new schedule during the week, Monday through Wednesdays set times will change to 7pm and 9pm instead of 6pm, 8pm and 10pm. We have determined that 6pm is just to early and it is hard for folks to get here that early with traffic and what not, and the 10pm show is too late for many of our customers. The time transition is as follows.
Mondays 7 and 9pm sets effective immediately.
Tuesdays 7 and 9pm sets effective July 30th
Wednesdays 7 and 9pm sets effective August 7th
With that, the weekly residencies are changing and some temporary changes. Those changes are as follows.
1. Mondays Hot Nut Riveters will not play the first three mondays in July, substitute band to be announced.
2. Scrappy Jud Newcomb will be gone for the month of July and Laura Scarborough will move from 10pm to 9pm for the month.
3. Miles Zuniga will be gone after July 2nd and Kevin McKinney will fill the 10pm slot until July 30th when Tuesdays change to the 7 and 9pm schedule and at that point DURAWA will start at 7pm and The Apostles of Manchaca Will start at 9pm.
4. The Apostles of Manchaca Will take a one month break in August and return in September. Substitute band to be announced
5. Earl Poole Ball will move from Saturday at 6pm to Wednesdays at 7pm on August 7th.
6. Thursdays Van Wilks 7pm residency will end at the end of July and he will return in November. The 7pm Thursday slot will be filled by John Neilson until September 19th when Miles Zuniga takes over.
7. Matt the Electrician's residency has ended and will return in October. The slot will be filled in July by SouthPaw Jones, August will be Betty Soo and September by Seela.
I think that is it! All of these schedule changes remind me of what a big job Kacy has booking this place and how well she does it.

Louise Monroe
|
Austin-resident singer/songwriter Louise Monroe is venturing out into the music scene after spending 2012 recording and producing her first album. With melodies and lyrics truly spirited in the Americana tradition, she shares her experiences with bittersweet hope and longing.
Louise was raised on her family farm in Southeast Mississippi after being transplanted from her birthplace in Pasadena, Texas at the age of four. Under the accidental tutelage of her musically inclined grandparents and uncles, she cut her teeth on the songs of The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and Hank Williams; by age 17 she was playing her own guitar and dabbling in songwriting.
Life took a series of sharp turns, leaving the artist with a lackluster vision of ever taking her music beyond family gatherings and living room jam sessions. But in 2011, the way became clear and Louise deemed herself ready for the task. After being guested into the Kerrville Folk Festival, Louise's timidity melted away as she played her original music for several of the festival's patrons, including Peter Yarrow. The experience and Yarrow's heartfelt encouragement inspired her to return to Austin and begin piecing together her first album, Borrow or Lie.

Will Taylor & Strings Attached
play the Songs of Stevie Wonder with vocals by Tameca Jones, Jayme Ivison, and Dave Quanbury
|
When International Touring Grammy Winning Artists like Pearl Jam, Eddy Vedder, P Diddy and others come to Austin, they call this man for their String Needs.
Alicia Keys discovered Gary Clark Jr. through a Strings Attached live video performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from their huge White Album show of 2006. For the past decade, Will Taylor's group Strings Attached has made a name for itself by reworking iconic music like the Beatles 'White album', Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Rubber Soul as well as the hits of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Jimi Hendrix-adding jazz and roots flavors along with string arrangements to lovingly assembled acoustic renditions. Their performances in churches and sanctuaries are akin to a religious experience for fans. Friday, July 5th Will Taylor and Strings Attached continues its new series called Be Strange with Strings Attached First Fridays

Amanda Pearcy
|
Amanda Pearcy's bluesy country-leaning Americana sound is served up by way of her hardscrabble history, authentically grounded in a raw and earthy, soulful voice. Testifying to her southeast Texas upbringing, with the region's multicultural mix, its Gulf of Mexico coastline, and its shared border with Louisiana's Acadiana, the songs on Pearcy's second CD, Royal Street, carry a sense, and the sensuality, of the South, weaving themes of home, and its loss; love, both surrendered to, and longed for; the casting of spells; the ties that bind old friends; and our human experience's collective memory. Her version of Jagger's & Richards' "No Expectations", and a bonus track of the spiritual "Wish I's in Heaven Settin' Down" (often attributed to Mississippi Fred McDowell) are right at home with Pearcy's 12 original compositions. Royal Street is a true album, a collection of songs that settle in for the ride through Texas to New Orleans and back again; the journey being a testament of life's tougher lessons learned too young, and the insight that comes with getting to the other side of them. Clay McClinton
|
As a son of the Texas soil, Clay McClinton reflects the country and blues traditions of his native state, while weaving a sound of his own. It's been called honky-tonk, Americana, and Texas Roots. As a musician he expresses the joy and suffering of being alive. Clay is a soulful singer-songwriter and musician whose talent brings out emotions and moods in his audience. Clay has been creating his unique sound for nearly a decade. Some of his influences are his father- Delbert McClinton, Rodney Crowell, Mark Knopfler, J.J. Cale, Terry Allen, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson.
Clay's musical virtuosity shines with the release of his third album, Livin' Out Loud (2010). He blends Americana and Texas blues with a touch of country to give us a tremendous follow up to his two previous releases-Out of the Blue (2004) and Son of a Gun (2006). Livin' Out Loud is openhearted and thoughtful, and often explores the tension between the love for adventure and the longing for home. Clay has taken grand leaps both as a singer-songwriter and as a musician, and the eleven tracks also foretell of great things to come. Much like his earlier albums, Clay wrote or co-wrote ten of the tracks. He was honored to write with Bruce Channel, Dave Duncan, Rob Roy Parnell, Ricky Ray, and of course, Delbert. He produced the album with Kevin McKendree, a longtime family friend as well as Delbert's piano player. Clay describes the process of creating the album with these and other great musicians as one of self-discovery and personal and professional growth. Read More Here

Van Wilks & Josh Smith (Acoustic) 7-8:30pm ($5)
In his third decade as a veteran of the world-famous Austin music scene, Van Wilks "continues to make some of the city's hottest guitar rock.", says the Austin Chronicle, creating music that brings his blues roots to the cutting edge with funk, hard-rock and melodic undertones. His compelling, hard-edged, bluesy rock prompted England's tastemaking "Kerrang!" to name Van Wilks' Mercury Records release "Bombay Tears" as "one of my all time faves," declaring it "a masterpiece."His band, also known as Van Wilks, has topped music polls by the Austin Sun (Band of the Year), the Austin Chronicle (Best Hard-Rock Band four years in a row) and KLBJ-FM(Best Austin Band). Austin's Mayor has proclaimed November 6 as "Van Wilks Day" and the Texas Legislature presented him with the Texas flag and a plaque honoring his musical contributions to the State. The French magazine "Guitarist" has placed Van's records in the editor's top picks two years running.Declared "a perfect cross between Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen" by the Austin-American Statesman, Van Wilks has toured nationally and internationally with such acts as ZZ Top (whose Billy Gibbons is one of Van's biggest supporters) and torn the roof off nightclubs and concert halls from Lubbock, Texas , the Virgin Islands, Moscow, Paris, Madrid, and countless points all over Europe. As the Houston Chronicle noted of one show: "By the end of the night we were all so delirious we wouldn't let them go until they came out for several post-closing-time encores".Van Wilks Website
SouthPaw Jones 9PM-10:30PM ($5)
Songmaker * Whimsicologist * Austinite Southpaw Jones treads lightly on the thin ice of irreverent honesty. Being left-handed, he naturally turns his guitar upside-down to play more comfortably. Being a creative little brother, he naturally turns the world upside-down to make his audience squirm with delight. Southpaw has resided in Houston, Nashville, and Los Angeles, and he now calls Austin home. He performs solo, if not with Matt the Electrician, reaching out to find those open-minded folks who thirst for singable melodies and one-of-a-kind lyrics. Southpaw sells CDs and MP3s at reasonable prices, and he updates southpawjones.com to the delight of dozens. Critics say he has "that most amazing ability to be hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time," and his songs are "at once political, personal, serious, hilarious, lucid, and muddled." Author Spike Gillespie calls him "the left-handed Elvis Costello and the best songwriter in the land." Southpaw calls himself "Slim" and sleeps in the fetal position. Southpaw has had the honor of opening shows for Dan Bern, Terri Hendrix, James McMurtry, Slaid Cleaves, Fred Eaglesmith, and Lisa Loeb, performing in legendary listening rooms from coast to coast. He has performed with 5 instruments in 17 states during the past 10 years, but who's counting?

Earl Poole Ball and Friends 6pm ($5)
Earl and his band are fantastic as it includes the best of the best. If you don't know, Earl played piano for Johnny Cash for 20 years or so.
* Casper Rawls on guitar. Casper was once a guitar tech for Super Tramp until they fired him, this is what Casper said about the incident. "Roger Hodgson, Supertramp's singer, came over to me, and shook my hand and said: "Look, I know you've been out working on the crew for us on this tour, but I don't ever want to see you out here again. Basically, you're fired. You take that guitar and you go play music for the rest of your life." " And that's what I did."
* Donny Wyn on Drums. Donny played drums for Robert Palmer for 20 years, and recently play with Robert Plant (yes that Robert Plant) and his wife Patty Griffin for a benefit held at The Continental Club.
* Glenn Fukunaga on bass. Glenn "
has emerged as one of Austin's most respected and sought after bassists, having played with a Who's Who list of artists that includes the likes of Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and Dr. John, just to name a few."
Sundays
Gospel Brunch W/ The Purgatory Players 11AM-1PM (FREE)
Each week, some of Austin's most celebrated musicians come together to create one of Austin's best Gospel Brunch events and raise money for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. The usual players are Jeff Plankenhorn, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, John Dee Graham and Conrad Choucroun and sometimes special guest that have included- Malford Milligan, David Grissom, Guy Forsyth, Paul Mills, Warren Hood, Darcie Deaville, Paul Mills, Jon Greene, Seela Misra and more.... Since all of these musicians are highly sought after and are sometimes out of town, the lineup changes almost every week, keeping it fresh and ever changing in the best of ways.
Matt Smith's CHOP SHOP 3PM ($5)
Very few guitarists are able to jump styles like Matt. Blues, jazz, country, funk, folk - you name it. Matt not only gets the notes right, but gets his head right as well. It's rare to hear a player who is so good at so many things.
That ability has made Matt one of the busiest players in New York. He's played the Blue Note as well as Carnegie Hall, Central Park Summerstage and Eisenhower Park with the NY Pops Orchestra. He's performed with, opened for, or recorded with B.B. King, Sheryl Crow, Trey Anastasio, Al DiMeola, Greg Allman, Los Lobos, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Adrian Legg, Ed Gerhard, Portishead and many others
