In Brief

The EPA announced a total of $2.9 million in funding for New England states to address lead in drinking water at schools and child care facilities


The Lake Champlain Basin Program seeks proposals for projects that support aquatic organism passage and restore stream connectivity, as well as for projects that conserve land for clean water and healthy ecosystems in the basin.


The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services released a report highlighting water quality trends in rivers and streams across the state, showing improvements in pH levels and total nitrogen concentration.


The Long Island Sound Partnership published a new Stewardship Strategy to support the Long Island Sound Stewardship Initiative and its 33 designated stewardship areas.


According to a new study, increasing levels of artificial sweeteners are being observed in wastewater treatment plants across the globe, with downstream impacts on the environment.


The U.S. Senate confirmed David Fotouhi to serve as the deputy administrator of the U.S. EPA. Fotouhi is an experienced environmental attorney who previously served in senior roles at EPA. 


The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the availability of $5.9 million to help communities facing environmental justice challenges implement innovative and effective projects to address environmental concerns. Applications are due August 13.


A Vermont Public article discusses how a team of researchers at the University of Vermont and Lake Champlain Sea Grant Program are studying microplastics in Lake Champlain to determine where the plastic is coming from and how it may be affecting wildlife.


The EPA announced over $12 million in grant funding for states and tribes to develop underground injection control programs that protect sources of drinking water.

Community Science and Education Spotlight: The Hudson River Eel Project

Every spring, students pull on waders and drag a seine net through the Hudson River in search of glass eels. The annual Hudson River Eel Project is a community science effort that helps youth connect and engage with their local watersheds. In this new video, hear from NEIWPCC Environmental Analyst and Hudson River Estuary Program Education Associate Rebecca Houser, who has more than 20 years of experience in the field, as she describes the impacts of this project.

Accolades

Ryan Bell, program manager, and Colleen Bradley, environmental analyst, represented the New York State Department of Health at the Chautauqua Institution Lake Conference to discuss drinking water source protection.


Matthew Vaughan, environmental analyst and Lake Champlain Basin Program chief scientist, presented at the Federation of Vermont Lakes and Ponds 2025 Lake Seminar about the water quality impacts of de-icing salt in Lake Champlain and its tributaries. Vaughan also spoke with Vermont Public about the state of the lake.
