Registration is open for the Annual Nonpoint Source Conference, which will take place in Freeport, Maine on April 9-10.

In Brief

NOAA and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the establishment of the Hudson River Estuary Physical Oceanographic Real-time System (PORTS®). The system delivers real-time oceanographic and meteorological observations that can improve maritime safety and inform coastal resource management in the region. This work is supported by NEIWPCC staff as part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve research team.


The EPA extended the public comment period on the Draft Sewage Sludge Risk Assessment for Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (PFOS) in biosolids until April 16.


The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation released five new draft general permits and two updated general permits for various activities in state-regulated freshwater wetlands and wetland adjacent areas, protected waterbodies, and navigable waters. Public comment on the proposals is open until March 14.


The Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative, a working group of fisheries professionals from Vermont and New York agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will host a ‘State of the Lake Fisheries’ meeting on Sat., March 15.


A four-part webinar series will profile recent projects by the Hudson River Estuary Grants Program. Grantees will share successes from their work, lessons learned, and tips for designing an effective project.


A team of scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has debuted a new, highly accurate method for quantifying carbon capture in the Northeast's salt marshes.


The Lake Champlain Basin Program reissued several requests for proposals, including for organizational support and capacity building, education and outreach initiatives, economic valuation studies, and projects that boost New York organizational capacity. 


Former New York State Senator Michael Martucci has been tapped as Region 2 administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which includes New York.

Accolades

Matthew Vaughan, environmental analyst and Lake Champlain Basin Program chief scientist, delivered a presentation on de-icing salt to the Vermont Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee. 


Peter Zaykoski, South Portland Program manager, testified in front of the Maine State Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs and the Joint Standing Committee on Environment and Natural Resources. He spoke about the funding included in the Maine biennial budget bill that NEIWPCC receives to support the Maine Joint Environmental Training Coordinating Committee.
