Denison gets new turf & new name at dedication

The many cleated feet of Heights athletes will be safely making turns again at Denison Field, a multi-sport, FIFA-sized playing field that was past its life expectancy until the City’s Parks & Recreation Department stepped in and Mayor Seren and City Council agreed to allocate $1.1 million in COVID-era ARPA funding to cover the re-turfing project.

Community members walked onto the crisp new turf of Denison Park on Tuesday, August 5, when Heights United Soccer Academy leader, CH-UH Schools science teacher, and Cleveland Heights High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Famer, Sean Sullivan, held a free soccer clinic to mark the occasion. As a surprise that left Coach Sullivan nearly speechless, Mayor Seren dedicated the field as “Sean Sullivan Field” in honor of Sullivan's many years of service to the community as the City unveiled a brand new scoreboard proclaiming the same. Check it out here: https://youtube.com/shorts/DGgBQ2d2oXY?si=cbtkuAwxtzSoGa_B

Heights United Soccer Academy is one of the many Cleveland Heights organizations that rely on this field for practices and matches, including the Eastside Kickers, the Heights High JV and Varsity soccer teams, Cleveland State’s soccer club, and the Ohio Premier Football Club.

Beaumont High School plays nighttime matches at Denison because its campus field doesn’t have industrial lighting. Jumpstart Sports t-ball and recreational baseball and softball teams also use the field when regular ball diamonds are not playable, and the independent Heights Tigers Youth Football League—a long-standing feeder program for the high school—regularly practices here.

The new turf will also meet current codes for safety and efficacy. Its architecture includes three layers: a base pad, the turf itself, and a top layer made out of a product called BROCKfill, an organic infill comprised of fire-treated wood particles.
