Welcome to the August 2022 edition of Street Talk, updating you on street and other roadway and infrastructure projects in Garland.

Shiloh Road Project

If you travel through the Shiloh Road/Garland Avenue/Interstate 635 corridor, you may have noticed traffic improvements. This is all due to the Shiloh Road Improvement Project finally being completed. The project involved more than just the widening of the street; it took extensive planning and cooperation among a number of partners to make it all happen. Here’s a closer look at the multimillion dollar project from beginning to end and what to expect moving forward.

Engineering: Project Updates

Wynn Joyce Road A 24-inch water line project is currently under construction on Wynn Joyce from Country Club Drive to Oates Road. Traffic is currently one way eastbound and is affecting school traffic. As seen below, traffic on Country Club Road and west bound Wynn Joyce Road is being detoured to Club Creek Boulevard. This project will take about four months to complete.

Bobtown Road We have some great news! The construction on Bobtown Road is nearing completion. This road is expected to be fully open by the end of this month.

Mayfield Drive Contractors began construction at Mayfield Drive earlier this month. The road will undergo a complete reconstruction from Centerville Road to Saturn Road and includes water line replacements and some sewer replacements. During the first phase, on various segments, it will be one-way westbound from Centerville Road to Saturn Road. This project is expected to take about a year to complete.  For more information about these projects, contact Senior Field Engineer Mike Rozelle at 972-205-2174.

Railroad Crossing Improvement Projects

West Kingsley Road

At the beginning of this month, the Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCS) completed the process of replacing the track infrastructure on their rail line where it crosses West Kingsley Road between National Drive and Industrial Lane. This is the first phase of this project and we want to emphasize that the improvements in this crossing are not complete.

Build Garland: Project Updates

Downtown Construction The infrastructure work of Phase 2 is underway. The intersection at Fifth and State streets is closed and the segment of State Street between Fifth and Sixth streets will remain closed for approximately five to six months. Fifth Street between Main and State streets will remain closed for the first few months of this phase.

The intersection of Seventh and Austin streets is closed for crosswalk improvements. Access to the Central Library west side parking lot will be open from the eastern drive on Sixth Street. Access to the Central Library east side parking lot will remain open. During this time, businesses will remain open and so will the adjacent sidewalks. Construction in the Downtown area is expected to last through 2023. We are grateful for your patience during this time. Please remember to support our Downtown businesses as they remain open and plenty of parking is available throughout construction. Bottleneck Projects This project series includes intersection-widening improvements to relieve bottlenecks at major intersections throughout the city. Currently, utility relocations are underway in these intersections with construction starting at the intersection of Garland Avenue and State Highway 190 (see map below). Utility Relocations Currently, utility relocations are underway on Naaman School and Holford roads in anticipation of construction. They will continue over the next couple of months as construction is expected to begin in early 2023.
