Welcome to the December 2021 edition of Street Talk, updating you on street and other roadway and infrastructure projects in Garland.

Downtown Square Revitalization: Street Closures

We’re excited to have the Downtown Square revitalization project underway, but we do want to let you know that this project means there will be some road closures in the Downtown area. The temporary closure of Fifth Street started the week of Dec. 6 and will remain closed for construction. As the project progresses, Main Street will also be closed. This is estimated to occur toward the end of this month. Construction for this entire project is expected to last until 2023. As the project advances, closures will vary, but we will keep you updated on this information. We also want to note that pedestrian access and all of the businesses in the area will remain open. We Are Among the Nation's Cities with Lowest Pothole Complaints

According to an article published by The Clunker Junker, a nationwide junk car removal and junk car buying service, Garland ranks as one of the nation's cities with the lowest pothole complaints on Twitter. Their methodology included using Twitter API to extract tweets from the U.S. In their research, they used Github and Overpass API to discover road length for every city and every region researched. They then calculated the number of complaints per 1,000 km of road. The data was collected in August-September 2021 and the information was made available Oct. 21, 2021. We are very proud to have made the list of the fewest complaints with 5.8 Twitter complaints a year. This showcases the efforts the Garland Street Department makes to fulfill our mission to provide high-quality service to the residents of Garland.
