Welcome to the February 2022 edition of Street Talk, updating you on street and other roadway and infrastructure projects in Garland.

Interstate 30 Expansion in Rockwall County

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) is working on the Interstate 30 Expansion Project from Bass Pro Drive to Dalrock Road. Segment 1 has begun and Segments 2 and 3 are estimated to begin construction in late 2022. The purpose of this project is to widen main lanes and add frontage roads to relieve congestion.

State Highway 66 Project

If you have recently driven on State Highway 66 from First Street to Rowlett Creek (city limits), you probably noticed construction. TXDOT began these pavement repairs last month, and they are scheduled to continue for roughly six months. Expect lane closures in both directions throughout this time. Downtown Construction: Water Project

This month, the contractor will begin work on the water project along Avenue A crossing to Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. During work hours there will be one lane open with flagmen allowing traffic to pass in both directions. At the end of each work day they will plate the area, so no lanes will be shut down. We anticipate a partial closure when the contractor paves the area and while the concrete cures. This is expected to occur by the end of winter after the contractor finishes manholes and tests the lines.   Construction in the Downtown area is expected to last until 2023. Pedestrian access and all of the businesses in the area will remain open. Please continue to support them!

Transportation Maintenance & Operations Building

As part of Garland's 2019 Bond Program, the process to renovate and bring the existing Maintenance & Operations building up to current industry standards has been completed. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place as part of Build Garland Day.

The original building was constructed in 1955. Today it is where the Transportation Department fabricates City signs and maintains traffic signals, school flashers, signs, stop bars, crosswalks and lane lines.

635 East Project

Construction and various bridge work continues on all Garland streets that cross Interstate 635 (I-635). Short-term daytime and overnight closures will continue throughout the year, along with the long-term closure of the eastbound I-635 exit ramp to Northwest Highway that started last summer. This exit will open when construction is complete.
