Grace Avenue Meat Ministry

Hanging with my Grill friends…

Have you ever wanted to be a part of something so good, you could taste it and share it with others? Well, the Meat Ministry here at GAUMC is looking for YOU. We have had a dedicated group that have helped serve us for the past several years and now they are ready to pass it on. Join our list of Grill friends that can help us prepare, grill and serve along side some of the greatest people in town. This group serves up yummy food a few times a year (Hint: the next opportunity is lunch on March 25) and welcomes the community. All the tools needed are provided and the proceeds support our work of helping our neighbors in need. You may want to bring your own grilling apron.

There’s A Bit of BBQ In All of Us.

Kid’s Day Out is now accepting registration for the 2023-2024 School year. This is a weekday program for children who have turned 1 year old by September 1, 2023 but have not yet turned 2 by the same date. The program meets on Tuesday & Thursday from 9:00am-2:15pm during the school year (September- May). We believe in creating a loving, safe, and Christian environment in which our youngest children can grow socially as well as academically. We believe that our children learn through guided play. They will use their 5 senses to learn about the world around them. Children in the Kid’s Day Out program will participate in guided play, circle time, music and movement, outdoor play, and hands on activities. Registration forms are available at the Children’s Welcome desk, the church office our you can download at the link. Contact Kristen Lane at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Led by Laura Byrd | Thursdays @ 7:00 pm

March 23-April 13

Tom Graves Hall [In Person and Online Available]

Author Emmanuel Acho believes the only way to cure our nation’s oldest disease- racism- is to start talking to one another…until it gets a little uncomfortable. Uncomfortable conversations are where we grow! In this four-week study, we will learn the basics of anti-racist thinking, answering questions such as ‘What does it mean to be an ally? Is reverse racism a thing? Why is white privilege just not for the wealthy?’ Come join us on our continued journey as a community moving towards racial justice. Spring 2023 Confirmation

March 23-May 24, 2023 Thursdays from 4:30-6:30pm

6th - 8th Grade Students

Confirmation is when Christians choose their faith for themselves and "confirm" their intent to live out their baptismal vows. At Grace Avenue we offer a Confirmation Class each semester for 6th-8th graders to learn more about their faith before choosing to be confirmed and becoming full members of the church. This spring, Confirmation Class will meet every Thursday afternoon from 4:30-6:00pm starting on March 23rd and meeting weekly through May 4th. The Confirmation Service will be in the afternoon of Sunday, May 7th. Attendance at all Confirmation Class dates and the retreat is mandatory. If you have scheduling conflicts, please reach out to Sarah.

If your High School student is interested in Confirmation, please contact Sarah at [email protected]. We would love to make arrangements as needed.

Dallas Responds is Oak Lawn UMC's Outreach Program or the Mission Arm of our Ministry within our Dallas Community. Dallas Responds is where our words and beliefs are put into action within our community. Our approach is entrepreneurial and inclusive of everyone in our community.

How Can You Help Now?

This month we will be collecting new or slightly used backpacks and tennis shoes (adult sizes) for Dallas Responds. We affirm and embrace all people and want to ensure they have the items they need. Bring your donations to the Grace On The Go trailer at any time! As we journey through the Lenten season, let us remember how we can be the hands and feet of Christ each day.

Word On The Street

Sometimes a parenthetical comment is the one that is the most important. At first it may seem coincidental or secondary to the main conversation. It can, however, be the most revealing, and pertinent thing, said or described.

Consider the scripture John 2:1-12. This is the story of Jesus’ first great miracle. At a wedding in Cana of Galilee, the celebration begins to run out of wine. Jesus calls for several large purification jars to be filled with water, and when the water is given to the wine steward, it has been changed into wine. No one knew where the wine had come from and the wine steward remarks that it was the best wine that has been served to that point. In verse 9, we get the very important parenthetical comment from the Gospel writer John. It says:

“When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, he did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew)”.

John 2:9 NRSV

The Bible was written in its original languages without punctuation. Sometimes that causes interesting decisions in regards to interpretation. In other words, in the original Greek, there were no punctuation marks around verse 9.

The parenthetical comment from verse 9, however, is extremely important. “The servants…knew.”

I believe miracles are happening around us every day. Maybe we are better equipped to see and recognize those miracles when we are serving God and others. Service, therefore, is not a burden or obligation, but the most accessible way to see and experience, the grace of God.

How are you being called to service during this Lenten season?
