The Light in the Darkness
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matt. 5:14-16 NKJV).
Have you ever been in the country or somewhere with no streetlights at all? It is incredibly dark! You can barely see what's in front of you, let alone what's beside you or behind you. That kind of darkness can be unsettling because you don't know what may be approaching or what could be hiding just out of sight. I remember visiting my great-grandmother's home in Mississippi. There was only one light pole on the property, but if you stood beneath it, everything changed. That single light didn't illuminate the entire property, but it pushed back the darkness enough for you to see clearly and find your way back to the house.
That's a beautiful picture of who we are as believers in Jesus Christ. We are called to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). In a world filled with darkness, confusion, and hopelessness, God has placed His light within us so that others can see Him through our lives. But, not everyone welcomes the light. Jesus tells us in John 3:19-20 that many prefer darkness because the light exposes what is hidden. But that should never discourage us from shining. The light of Christ reveals truth, brings hope, offers healing, and points people to the saving love of God.
So today, I encourage every believer and every follower of Jesus: let your light shine brightly. You may feel like just one small light in a dark world, but remember, even one light can pierce the darkness and help someone find their way to Christ. Shine for His glory. Someone is depending on your light. Amen!
