SBA Advocates for Streamlining the Permit Process at First Contractor & Developer Focus Council Meeting

Advocating for the success of local businesses is at the heart of the Spokane Business Association (SBA). On October 15th, the SBA hosted its inaugural Contractor and Developer Focus Council meeting, bringing together over 20 local contractors and developers for an engaging discussion on the challenges – and successes - they face in the permitting process.

During the meeting, the group emphasized the need for a more streamlined approach to permitting, particularly advocating for a clear path forward that would minimize delays and prevent late-stage changes to project submissions.

Since that meeting, SBA CEO Gavin Cooley has met with city officials, who have shown a positive and energetic attitude toward addressing concerns voiced by the Council. The city is actively working ons responses and is proposing changes to the permitting process to better support the development community.

The SBA will host another meeting with the Contractor and Developer Focus Council in February, where the city’s responses and action plans will be shared.

Thank you to all who attended and contributed valuable insights!

Businesses are the Backbone of Spokane, and Many are Reaching a Breaking Point

In this video, Alejandro highlights the pleas for help by businesses in the City. Their message is clear: it’s time for the City to act and enforce existing laws to restore safety and stability to our community.

CORE Program Update: Keeping Spokane’s Downtown Safe During the Holiday Season

As the holiday season arrives, we want to update you on the conclusion of the City of Spokane’s CORE (Crisis Outreach, Response, and Engagement) program, which officially expired on November 19, following a 30-day pilot and a one-week extension.

The initiative brought a much needed increased police presence to our downtown, through foot and bike patrols and enhanced coordination with behavioral health and social service providers. This proactive engagement contributed to a noticeable reduction in crime and a renewed sense of safety in our downtown area, even as it provided much-needed support to vulnerable populations.

Most importantly, business owners have reported improved conditions and a more welcoming environment for employees and customers alike - thanks to Police Chief Hall and the Spokane Police Department for their hard work and diligence!

What We’re Doing:

The Spokane Business Association is actively advocating for extending CORE with more resources, and through the holiday season.

With approval of the 1/10th 1% public safety initiative, we are also advocating for expanding and making the CORE program permanent – not just in downtown, but in other neighborhoods as well. This is what Citizens expected when they passed this new tax.

We encourage all members to share your thoughts on downtown and neighborhood safety with our elected leaders!
