Strike at 1 of 3 of Amazon's National Air Hubs

IE Amazon Workers strike because of unfair labor practices at the KSBD Amazon Air Hub in San Bernardino, CA. on October 14th, 2022.

“Amazon workers and our communities live and work at the frontlines of air pollution caused by companies like Amazon that refuse to clean up their act. Companies like this use their record breaking profits to make trips to Mars instead of giving back to workers and communities whose air they are polluting, environment they are exploiting and whose lands are being left unlivable. PCEJ stands in solidarity with the Amazon workers that walked out of their workplace, demanding a living wage and safe working conditions.” says Andrea Vidaurre

Policy Director for People’s Collective for Environmental Justice.

KSBD, one of the only three Amazon air hubs. Air hubs (aka air freight fulfillment centers) serve as critical points in the Amazon supply chain, distributing goods across Amazon’s entire warehouse system. It’s a 24-hour facility with about 14 flights of cargo a day. KSBD was built amid record breaking profits during the pandemic and the community was promised quality jobs that were never delivered.

When a historic heat wave took hold, IE Amazon Workers began to document their temperatures, including one of 121 degrees on the tarmac, 96 inside cargo planes. And indoor temps up to 89 degrees and even 90 degrees were recorded in a “cooling station”.

When more than 900 workers signed on to pay increase petition to compete with inflation, Amazon ignored them, leading to a walkout of 150 staff, which was the majority of staff during the shift. Amazon responded by hiring expensive outside consultants to intimidate workers.

“Community members from across the Inland valley must constantly deal with the poor job and air quality that comes from the local logistics industry. Residents protested this and demanded higher standards when KSBD was first proposed in 2019. Now that the facility is open, community members still stand proudly with workers as they take courageous action for a living wage, safe working conditions, and no retaliation for their organizing.” Stated Mario Vásquez organizer with Teamsters Local1932

IE Amazon Workers organize with Athena coalition member Warehouse Worker Resource Center (WWRC) and in close relationship with Athena coalition member PowerSwitch Action, local environmental groups People’s Collective for Environmental Justice (PC4EJ) and My Gen, the Teamsters and others.
