Pension Strikes and Protests Continue to Impact Supply Chain in France

France continues to experience ongoing strikes as workers protest against proposed changes to the pension system. These strikes have impacted a variety of sectors, including transportation, with a significant disruption to the country's ports for import and export operations. A source tells KRIEGER Worldwide, "Strikes in all the country, ports closed three days a week, train activity on slow motion..." Reports indicate the strike will continue until March 20th and "France's CGT union said it will have a national assembly on 16 March, when the direction of the strikes will be discussed and votes taken."

Another report describes the scene in Paris, "Train drivers, school teachers, dock workers, oil refinery workers and others joined garbage collectors in walking off their jobs on Wednesday, maneuvering past thousands of tons of garbage piling up on the sidewalks of Paris and other French cities." Reports from the Wall Street Journal detail the significance of the strikes stating "More than a million workers across France walked off the job and took to the streets Tuesday, kicking off what unions are touting as an open-ended standoff with President Emmanuel Macron over his plans to raise the retirement age."

To relieve pressure from the supply chain, measures are being taken to minimize the impact of the strikes. One such measure is to reroute shipments through alternative ports or modes of transportation, for example rerouting cargo to Antwerp, Belgium or Spain to avoid disruption. While this can add to transit times, it helps to avoid delays and disruptions caused by the ongoing strikes in France. KRIEGER Worldwide experts have years of navigating complex transportation disruptions. We are able to leverage our network of global partners to provide alternative transportation routes and methods in an effort to minimize the impact on your business's supply chain. Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Statistics

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) establishes a rebuttable presumption that the importation of any goods, wares, articles, and merchandise mined, produced, or manufactured wholly or in part in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, or produced by certain entities, is prohibited by Section 307 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and that such goods, wares, articles, and merchandise are not entitled to entry to the United States.

The presumption applies unless the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) determines, through clear and convincing evidence, that the goods, wares, articles, or merchandise were not produced using forced labor or that UFLPA does not apply to the goods, wares, or merchandise seeking to be entered into the United States. The statistics provided below are shipments subjected to UFLPA reviews or enforcement actions.
