April Showers Bring May Flowers

April can be a challenging time on a University campus. It can also be an exciting, joyful, and energetic time. As we approach the end of the semester, let us acknowledge that many feelings can exist at the same time within us and among us. There are projects, deadlines, finals, achievements, disappointments, social events, celebrations, beginnings, endings, uncertainty and planning for the future. It can be a lot to take in and a lot to process. Please take a moment, take a breath, and acknowledge all that you are doing and dealing with right now.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the monthly Thrive activators meeting. In this group we spoke about how we were supporting our own well-being in addition to the well-being of the students we serve and the colleagues we engage with during this peak time of the semester. I share some of my takeaways with you in hopes that you may find a moment of relief as I did after spending time with this group:

  • This moment will end; we won’t feel this way forever. Relief can be a moment away.
  • Taking walking breaks (or some type of movement break) can provide mental clarity and relief.
  • Sometimes we are our own worst critic and perhaps we should extend ourselves grace instead (this takes practice)!
  • Acknowledge when things are not going well. It’s OK! Most people are quite forgiving.
  • Taking time to express yourself around caring people can create comforting connections.
  • Remember that our worth does not come from our external achievements.
  • If you are met with disappointment (didn’t get the grade, class, relationship, job, etc. you were hoping for), let yourself feel it and remember to be kind to yourself, you can adjust. There will be more opportunities available to you.
  • Reach out when you need additional support, you are not alone and there are so many people that care about you on this campus and elsewhere.

Rowan University is partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to host a suicide prevention walk. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among college students; when you walk with an Out of the Darkness Campus Walk, you join a national effort to support survivors of suicide loss, educate our community on prevention of suicide, and decrease stigma of mental illness.

Our goal is to continue to provide education as well as to fundraise money for AFSP in order to prevent suicides.
