Belonging to a Thriving and Caring Community
I am happy to be at Rowan University. I started working here a week before we were all sent home to work virtually last year. Even through the virtual world, I have been able to establish strong relationships that have helped me stay connected and resilient. It has been my privilege to work with amazing student athletes who are open and mindful and want to work to perform well both academically and in sports. It has been my experience with staff and faculty as well. The connections and rapport I feel with our community gives me hope. I was lucky to come in when I did because I don’t think I would have been able to do well throughout the Pandemic without the support I have found throughout my work and the connections I have been able to establish.
I want to share some of the strategies that have helped me and that I use in my work that help with performance, whether it has to do with academics, sports, or work:
- Make sure you are present, not in the past (if I had a chance, like last week) or the future (worrying about what will happen next).
- Be open (increased awareness, notice what is happening without judgement). Do what matters (action, what you need to do: finish a workout, a class, paper, essay…).
- Refocus plan: what can get you out of focus? (Fear, not feeling in control) How can you get back to effective focus? Breathe. Try this 4, 5, 6 exercise: breathe in for 5 counts and breathe out for 6 counts while slowly lowering your shoulders, do this 4 times a day as well as when you feel that your tension increases.
- Do not waste your energy on uncontrollable things. Ask yourself: is there anything I can do about it now? If the answer is no, give yourself permission to let it go and refocus on what you can do.
- Take time to do things you enjoy, draw, write, stretch, call a friend… when working out a schedule, keep these in mind.
- Make sure you take time to connect with people that give you energy, don’t be afraid to reach out!

During this Halloween let's be mindful of costumes that may impact individuals in our community, or cause others to feel emotions of anger, frustration, or being made to feel less than. From a perspective of diversity, equity, and inclusion and well-being, let's be intentional not to demean individuals with physical/hidden disabilities and to respect individuals of all cultures. Cultures are not costumes. Have fun, eat candy, and find a costume that is respectful of all.
