We appreciate the time and effort it took to complete these videos and submit them by the requested deadline. Your videos are one of the many great ways to educate our community regarding stroke and highlight its impact. Well the deadline has finally passed for video submissions and the votes are in. This team worked with their local EMS, Cape County Private Ambulance (CCPA) and their ED physician, Dr. David Meece (played the patient). Mrs. Meece "played" his wife. All other participants involved were employees of Southeast or CCPA.

What's New?

Contrast Shortage As many of you have likely already heard, we are in the midst of a critical shortage of iodinated IV contrast media. This will no doubt affect acute stroke patient care as we use contrast during advanced CT imaging in order to help determine candidacy for thrombectomy. Beyond that, contrast media is necessary during procedures performed in IR, including thrombectomy. Leadership across the stroke program has been working together to come up with a plan to reduce the amount of unnecessary contrast used, while still providing the top care that we are known for providing to our stroke patients. The main features of this plan include: Reduction of CTA & CTP during ASRTs (prior to ordering these tests, ASRT providers should approval from Radiology) Tighter patient selection with regards to procedures in interventional radiology

Changes to NIHSS DocFlowsheets Below are the change made to the NIHSS rows in the O2 Doc Flowsheet. These changes will make documentation more accurate with regards to the current NIHSS scoring system:

‘UN’ added as an option for the Motor Function/Limb Ataxia sections ‘UN’ added as an option for dysarthria section

‘Global Aphasia’ added to one of the options for Best Language

Bolded explanations added for Best Language/Dysarthria

REMINDER

When receiving report from a transferring facility for a potential or confirmed stroke patient, please remember NOT to provide the expected room number for the patient. This information gets relayed to EMS on occasion, which allows them to bring the patient directly to the room upon arrival. Instead of providing a room number, stress the importance of EMS bringing the patient directly to ED Hall 72. Our acute stroke response team will meet them there and make sure that the patient gets to their room safely. Thank you!
