MARCH 2024

A Look Ahead at 2024 for the

Comprehensive Stroke Program

From the Desk of the Stroke Program Coordinator, Chaeli Stenuf

As we continue to move through 2024, we're excited about the many projects happening within our Comprehensive Stroke Program. There's a lot on our plate, with a mix of big initiatives and ongoing projects keeping us busy.

Among our top priorities for the year:

  • Streamlining Stroke Identification Across the Hospital: We're rolling out the BE FAST protocol hospital-wide to make sure we're spotting stroke symptoms lightning-fast. This means quicker responses and better outcomes for our patients. We'll be checking in with staff before and after training to make sure everyone's up to speed.
  • Improving the Process for In-House Stroke Activations.
  • Enhancing Hemorrhagic Stroke Care: We're digging deep into improving how we handle hemorrhagic strokes. Working closely with our ICU and Neurosurgery teams, we're tweaking our processes to give patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) the best possible care.
  • Improving Transitions of Care: Smooth transitions are key to our patients' journey. That's why we're teaming up with Dr. Maali to continue fine tuning our Transitions of Care for stroke patients. We want to make moving between care settings as seamless as possible, boosting patient satisfaction and outcomes along the way.
  • Stroke Quality and Stroke Strategy Committees: We're doubling down on building these up. They're crucial in shaping the future of our program and pushing us to be among the best in the country.

With another International Stroke Conference (ISC) in the books, we're eager to share the latest insights presented. You can find all the updates on the Stroke Program SharePoint site: INTERNATIONAL STROKE CONFERENCE 2024

Also, we anticipate our Intra-cycle call with TJC in May or June. While this call is brief and won't demand extra effort from the team, we feel it is important for everyone to be in the loop. It's our opportunity to ensure we're heading in the right direction before their anticipated visit in 2025.

Here's to another fantastic year with the most skilled and talented team we know!

Stroke In The News

Oklahoma news anchor Julie Chin experienced a stroke live on-air, marked by sudden vision loss, arm numbness, and garbled speech. Her quick-thinking colleagues called 911, leading to an early stroke diagnosis at the hospital. Chin is now recovering well. For more details and to watch the video, click here.

Recent research challenges the long-held belief in "mommy brain," a term used to describe perceived cognitive impairments in pregnant and postpartum women. Studies reveal that while many mothers report memory lapses, objective assessments show no significant cognitive decline. Instead, motherhood brings about brain adaptations that enhance certain cognitive and emotional abilities. This new understanding shifts the perspective from deficit to adaptation, highlighting the remarkable capabilities of the maternal brain during this transformative period. We're excited to announce the Stroke Recovery Registry, an important resource for those who have experienced a stroke. This registry aims to connect stroke survivors with opportunities in stroke recovery research. We encourage our staff to inform their stroke patients about this opportunity.

Patients interested in joining can easily register by scanning the provided QR code. For additional information, they can reach out to Amanda Britton Carpenter at KU Medical Center (abritton@kumc.edu). Please note that phone enrollment takes approximately 45 minutes. The principal investigator of this initiative is Sandra Billinger, PT, Ph.D., FAHA.

This registry is a valuable tool for advancing stroke research and recovery methods, and we hope many will take advantage of it.
