Hemorrhagic Stroke Risk Impacted by Blood Glucose Levels
Strokes are responsible for 1 out of 20 deaths in the US – that’s ~ 140,000 Americans’ lives lost each year. Diabetes is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke, which accounts for the majority of strokes (87%) in the US. The 2nd most common stroke subtype is intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The relationship between diabetes and ICH is not well understood. A 2018 study published in Stroke examined 96,110 Chinese participants to estimate the impact of long-term fasting blood glucose concentrations on risk of ICH.
Vitamin D Supplementation & Autism
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental syndrome affecting 1 in 68 US children. Vitamin D is a neurosteroid, and vitamin D insufficiency has been linked to ASD in correlational studies. Robustly designed intervention trials are scant. The first double-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) utilizing vitamin D3 supplementation in children with ASD was recently published in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The study included 109 Egyptian children 3-10 years of age with ASD and aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of vitamin D for ASD symptoms.

NEW Functional Medicine & Epigenetics Workshop
Knowing a patient's genetic profile enables the practitioner to strategically guide the patient in lifestyle and nutrition choices for disease prevention and optimal health. This workshop will cover methylation and the functions of core single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their co-factors. Core patterns and common patient archetypes will be described. Treatment options will be provided to integrate SNP pattern solutions and optimize underlying genetic vulnerabilities in your patients.
