Struck By Campaign

Struck-by is the term that Ontario’s prevention system uses for the various injuries that occur when workers are hit—or struck—by tools, materials, equipment, or vehicles. Just like falls, struck-by is a leading cause of injury in the industries that IHSA serves. One workplace fatality in any year is one too many, regardless of the sector, industry, or occupation.

The MLITSD has launched a focused campaign on Struck-by from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. The campaign will focus on:

  • Single-family residential
  • Multi-family residential
  • Industrial
  • Commercial
  • Road/sewer/water

It will include:

  • Focused inspection blitz: Inspectors conduct field visits to check that employers are complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, and to raise awareness about specific issues at the workplaces they are visiting.
  • Inspectors will engage with workplaces to promote compliance.
  • IHSA will continue to provide compliance support.

Visit the IHSA's Struck-by Hazards page to access many FREE resources to consider in controlling the hazards associated with struck-bys. We suggest you deliver a safety talk as a reminder to workplace parties of the hazards, and more importantly re-establish safe practices and procedures.

5 ways to remind workers to control risk:

  1. Provide Site Specific Training:  Ensure all workers on a construction project are aware of the specific tools, equipment, machinery, devices and vehicles being used on site and are familiar with and work in accordance to the manufacturer's operating manuals. Demonstrate how to safely perform work and ensure all the site specific rules and safe operating procedures are being followed.
  2. Conduct a hazard assessment of the site: A hazard assessment or Job Safety Analysis (JSA) will show what the hazards are, where they are located, and where controls are required. Review the checklist to develop a falling-object prevention plan to reduce likelihood of being struck by falling objects.
  3. Deliver a Safety Talk:  A safety talk is a hands-on way to remind workers that health and safety are important on the job. Each talk takes about five minutes and can help workers recognize and control hazards on the project. Safety talks demonstrate the commitment of employers and workers to health and safety. Access a variety of ready-to-go "Struck-By" Safety Talks here
  4. Get Trained: Prevent struck-by incidents with the right training: IHSA provides a number of courses that can help you build awareness of struck-by hazards and reduce injuries and fatalities. See suggested training here
  5. Keep your Promise: Struck-by Poster: This poster reminds workers, drivers, and pedestrians that they all have a role to play when it comes to preventing struck-by incidents when working around heavy equipment and motor vehicles here
