STUDENT CHAPTER LEADERSHIP WEB MEETING
|
Join us for a panel discussion and Q&A with engineering students from across the country. We will discuss best practices for establishing—and engaging—fellow students in a SEA Student Chapter, along with tips to help any student group. The panelists, from student chapters both old and new, will bring diverse perspectives on a variety of topics, including interacting with their SEAs.
This is your opportunity to learn how to create a successful, productive chapter from fellow engineering students. You don't want to miss this meeting!

2021 GRANT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS
DUE NOVEMBER 9
|
|
Applications for the 2021 Grant Program are due November 9. Application requests must be reviewed and approved by the Member Organization before being submitted to NCSEA for consideration.
The NCSEA Grant Program awards SEAs funding for projects that advance their SEA and the structural engineering profession in accordance with the NCSEA Mission Statement. Supported by the NCSEA Foundation, the SEA Grant Program has delivered more than $60,000 in Grants since its inception. Past funded initiatives range from building up STEM resources to launching a local SE3 committee.

Welcome to the next installment of Read.Watch.Listen: a monthly forum hosted by the NCSEA SE3 Committee to share and promote conversations on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the structural engineering profession. Each month, we will curate a series of articles, audio-visual and digital media to facilitate self-education in matters that affect our professional practice as structural engineers. Whether you choose to read, watch, or listen (or all three!), we hope you will join us in this important conversation.
This month, we focus on charitable acts as a way to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. As the season of giving is right around the corner, we are choosing to highlight engineering and STEM organizations that inspire and enable underserved communities to participate in STEM fields. You may recall, we highlighted three other organizations during this time last year. We hope these stories will, again, inspire you to give back with your time (volunteering and mentoring), your organizations (firm sponsorship), and/or through financial contributions. Please also consider ways to support the NCSEA Foundation, a nonprofit initiative established in 2020 with the goal of supporting and furthering NCSEA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Read more about it at this month’s bonus fact!
These organizations were selected because they align with NCSEA’s Call to Action. If you would like to suggest additional organizations for future columns, please send recommendations to [email protected].
Share your thoughts and/or recommended resources for the next issue at [email protected].

The National GEM Consortium works to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in graduate programs in engineering and STEM through employer sponsorship programs. This article celebrates two GEM fellows from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, and emphasizes the importance of improving representation and access to higher education in STEM fields.

The American Society for Engineering Education works to advance innovation, excellence, and access to education for the engineering profession. Its Minorities in Engineering Division aims specifically to increase diversity and inclusion within engineering education and the engineering profession. This webinar focuses specifically on the relationship between HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), HSIs (Hispanic-Serving Institutions), and PWIs (Primarily White Institutions), and how PWIs with extensive resources can be most effective as partners.

The NCSEA Resilience Committee seeks to provide a multidisciplinary collaboration platform to formulate recommendations and innovations to enhance resilience in the built environment. In an effort to further the Committee’s goal to educate the structural engineering community on resilience approaches to planning, design, and construction, the following resilience-focused content addresses strategies, practices, and ways of thinking to meet the challenges of designing in a multi-hazard environment. Acknowledging that resilience-thinking is cross-disciplinary, the content highlighted will be from many different perspectives and disciplines intentionally.
The NCSEA Resilience Committee published an article in Structure Magazine this month contemplating the suitability of the disaster management cycle as a framework to define and enhance community resilience to disasters. In this article (the first of a series), they explore the concept of adaptive resilience, the ability to implement immediate changes that minimize the impact of disruptive forces associated with a disaster while working to transform the built environment, real-time, using systems thinking. The committee was founded to develop positions and recommendations on issues in resilience-based planning and design. They hope this article will inspire structural engineers to advocate, educate, and develop transformative design solutions to meet the needs of an uncertain future.
On September 27, 2021, a new blueprint to prepare for and respond to extreme weather called “The New Normal: Combating Storm-Related Extreme Weather in New York City” was released by the Extreme Weather Response Task Force. The mayor announced plans to support the report’s recommendations to provide funding for stormwater infrastructure. This announcement was made a mere month after Hurricane Ida caused severe damage and causalities in New York and New Jersey, and Hurricane Henri broke records for single-hour rainfall just two weeks before. Yet again, the City was reminded that climate change is upon us and our infrastructure requires vast investment and innovative solutions to meet the challenges of the future.
Resilience Engineered is a three-part series on some of the most pressing challenges associated with 21st Century infrastructure systems development. The project aims to educate a wide array of professionals, educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders about resilient infrastructure systems and why they are important. This series was funded by The Resilience Shift and developed in collaboration with a team from the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. Check out the trailers online and request to host a screening in your organization by contacting [email protected].
